When going to Japan to admire the Aso volcano, which is famous for its caldera, the cable car is the most important means of transportation. However, due to earthquakes and other factors, the cable car was severely damaged and there was no sign of easing volcanic activity. Based on safety considerations, the operator announced on the 24th that it would stop The reconstruction plan, the 61-year history draws a rest.

According to the Nishi-Nihon Shimbun, the Asoyama cable car opened to traffic in 1958 and was operated by the Kyushu Sankyo Travel Company, formerly Kyushu Industrial Transportation. After getting on the mountain bus terminal on the west side of Mount Aso, tourists can reach the vicinity of the crater in only 4 minutes, with a total length of about 858 meters. Due to the stunning scenery of the crater and the continuous flow of tourists, about 500,000 people visit each year during the heyday.

However, as more than half of the entire journey is within the volcanic eruption level 2 warning zone within one kilometer of the crater, the cable car often stops. The 2016 Kumamoto earthquake severely damaged the cable car pillars, and during the shutdown, the machine room was repeatedly damaged by volcanic gases. It has been suspended since August 2014.

The original operator intends to update all equipment, build the car into a strengthened glass car, and start construction in May this year, hoping for a smooth return to 2020, but unfortunately, the volcanic activity is unending, and the operator is unable to enter the crater. The area within 1 km of the construction, and after the completion of the reconstruction can not ensure the safety of operation, and finally made a decision to abandon the reconstruction.

The cable car service will be replaced by a shuttle bus in the future.
