SINGAPORE: A total of 38 motorists were stopped and tested for alcohol consumption in an early-morning operation by the Traffic Police on Thursday (Aug 7). The result: 17 men and 2 women were arrested for drink-driving.

In its statement, the police said road blocks were set up across Singapore, and the 19 - aged between 22 and 62 - failed the Breath Evidential Analyser (BEA) test. The highest result recorded was 96 microgrammes of alcohol per millilitres of breath, which is two times the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 milliliteres of breath, it added.

Upon conviction, drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. They will also lose their driving licenses, and have to go through the theory and practical driving tests to regain their licenses, the police stated.

Additionally, first-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000 and have their licenses disqualified for a period of 12 to 48 months, depending on their BEA test results. Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years, and may also be caned up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused, the police said. - CNA/kk
