In November 2008, investigative journalist De Vries aired undercover footage of Van der Sloot making preparations for the sex trafficking of Thai women sex slaves in Bangkok. De Vries claimed that Van der Sloot was making US$13,000 for every woman sold into sex slavery in the Netherlands.[49] Van der Sloot used the alias "Murphy Jenkins" to avoid Thai authorities.[2] Peruvian Minister of Justice Aurelio Pastor said that Thailand was pursuing criminal charges against Van der Sloot. According to The National Enquirer, he is being investigated for his involvement in the disappearance of several young women he may have recruited for a Thai sex slave gang while posing as a production consultant for a modeling agency that would send them to Europe.[50]

Natalee Ann Holloway (October 21, 1986 – May 30, 2005) was an American woman whose disappearance made international news after she vanished on May 30, 2005, while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba in the Caribbean. Holloway lived in Mountain Brook, Alabama, and graduated from Mountain Brook High School on May 24, 2005, shortly before the trip.[4] Her disappearance caused a media sensation in the United States,[5] and the case remains unsolved.

Holloway was scheduled to fly home from Aruba on May 30, 2005, but she failed to appear for her flight.[6] She was last seen by her classmates outside of Carlos'n Charlie's, a restaurant and nightclub in Oranjestad.[7] She was in a car with local residents Joran van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers, Deepak and Satish. When the three men were questioned, they said that they dropped off Holloway at her hotel and denied knowing what had become of her.[8] Upon further investigation by authorities, Van der Sloot was arrested twice on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance and the Kalpoes were each arrested three times. Due to lack of evidence, the three suspects were released each time without being charged with a crime.[9][10] Holloway's parents have criticized Aruban police for the lack of progress in the investigation and interrogation of the three men who were last seen with their daughter. The family also called for a boycott of Aruba, which gained Alabama Governor Bob Riley's support but failed to gain widespread backing.[11][12]

With the assistance of hundreds of volunteers, Aruban investigators conducted an extensive search and rescue/recovery operation. American special agents from the FBI,[13] fifty Dutch soldiers and three specially-equipped Dutch Air Force F-16 aircraft participated in the search.[14][15][16] In addition to the ground search, divers searched the ocean floor for Holloway's body.[17] Her remains were not found.[18][19][20] On December 18, 2007, Aruban prosecutors announced that the case would be closed without any charges made.[21][22] The Aruban prosecutor's office reopened the case on February 1, 2008, after receiving video footage of Van der Sloot, under the influence of marijuana, saying that Holloway died on the morning of her disappearance, and that a friend had disposed of her body.[23] Van der Sloot later denied that what he had said was true, and in an interview said that he had sold Holloway into sexual slavery.[24]

Van der Sloot's prison cell became the target of a media circus, with reporters vying to gain exclusive access and report about his prison surroundings.[160][161] Since his incarceration, he has only consented to interviews to De Telegraaf, in which he admitted to extorting the Holloway family and said that he received a number of marriage proposals in his cell, including one from a woman who wanted to have his child.[74][162] Van der Sloot reportedly receives fan mail from around the world, though mostly from women residing in the United States and the Netherlands.[159] According to sources within the prison, Van der Sloot sought $1 million in exchange for an on-camera interview.[163]

On 4 July 2014, Van der Sloot married a Peruvian woman, Leydi Figueroa, whom he met while she was selling goods inside the prison. She was seven months pregnant with his child at the time.[174] On 28 September 2014, Figueroa gave birth in Peru.[175]
