THE Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has revoked the licences of 15 employment agencies (EAs) so far this year for various infringements, and forfeited their security deposits. Last year, 11 agencies lost their licences. The licensees and directors of the revoked agencies have also been barred from holding EA licences and key appointment in other agencies, said a statement from MOM on Tuesday morning.
The infringements ranged from illegal employment of foreigners, making false declarations in work permit applications and abetting operations of unlicensed employment agencies and agents. MOM also did not renew the licences of 17 EAs, compared to 14 non-renewals from 2006 to 2009, because of the agencies had made false declarations in work pass applications and acted as proxies for agents barred from holding a licence.
MOM added that the new EA regulatory framework that will kick in next year would give the ministry greater legislative authority to take rogue agents to task and raise the standards of the EA industry. A list of licensed employment agencies as well as other important regulatory information can be found on the Ministry's website at www.mom.gov.sg.
