COVID-19: NUS confirms 14 students with infection, 2 who breached SHNs

SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore (NUS) said that it has 14 students who are confirmed to be infected with COVID-19.

All 14 are imported cases, and had been transported directly from the airport to the hotels to serve their 14-day Stay-Home Notices (SHNs), according to a blog post by NUS Dean of Students Leong Ching on Saturday (29 March).

The blog post also said that by this week, NUS will have brought home all its 1,400 students who are overseas on exchange or attachment programmes. Over the last two weeks, the university has already brought home about 93 per cent of these students.

All these students will be on SHN as well.

Students living in NUS hostels but with homes in Singapore are strongly encouraged to go home, in light of enhanced Ministry of Health safe-distancing measures and the provision of e-learning options.

Two students breached SHNs, reported to ICA

Leong also wrote in the blog post that two students breached their SHNs, and have been reported to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. NUS has submitted video evidence of the two breaches to the authorities.

The post added that a breach of SHN is not only subject to the Infectious Diseases Act of the Government of Singapore, but also to the NUS Board of Discipline.

“Those of us on SHNs and Quarantine Order isolation should be scrupulous about not meeting anyone, and keeping to ourselves,” Leong wrote in the blog post.

“Being young and strong, you may think that it will not hit you hard. You may be right (or not), but it will expose many others – the elderly, the immune-compromised, the very young.”

A strong deterrence like jail term or expulsion should do the trick.
Verbal warning or consultation is totally useless against these people
