E-cigarettes like this one can be charged using a USB port, such as on a laptop. When it is charged, the stainless steel tube can be removed and "smoked". --ST PHOTO: CAROLINE CHIA

THERE is no smoke and no fire but an e-cigarette is still a cigarette, says the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). So far this year, it has smoked out 13 people for bringing in and selling the much-hyped e-cigarette, touted as a 'healthy' way to beat rising cigarette prices and a widening ban on smoking here. Last year's numbers are unavailable as cases started appearing late last year.

Does the e-cigarette produces toxic chemicals like the real cigarette?

Electronic cigarettes give you the desired effect of smoking real cigarettes without the health risks involved. Some of the risks of smoking a real cigarette include the development of harmful diseases such as oral cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, heart disease and respiratory infection.

So how does an e-cigarette work? When you smoke an e-cigarette, a flow sensor is activated that releases water vapour containing nicotine, scent and propylene glycol, which imitates the flavour of tobacco. You get all your nicotine cravings without the harmful cancer causing chemicals like glue, hydrocarbons, arsenic, tar and carbon monoxide.

Electronic cigarettes come with refillable cartridges and there is a wide range of flavours and nicotine strengths to choose from. These include menthol, regular, apple and strawberry which are available in zero, light, medium and full nicotine strengths.

Benefits of smoking an e-cigarette

Not only will electronic cigarettes improve the quality of your health, but you won’t have to worry about causing your loved ones any harm with second hand smoke. It’s even legal to smoke electronic cigarettes in public areas such as bars, clubs and at your office.

ps: its vapour not smoke ...

Found this report on the web. It says "Federal health officials said Wednesday they have found cancer-causing ingredients in electronic cigarettes, despite manufacturers' claims the products are safer than tobacco cigarettes." So it does contain toxic chemicals.

updated 4:11 p.m. ET July 22, 2009

WASHINGTON - Federal health officials said Wednesday they have found cancer-causing ingredients in electronic cigarettes, despite manufacturers' claims the products are safer than tobacco cigarettes.

The Food and Drug Administration said testing of products from two leading electronic cigarette makers turned up several toxic chemicals, including a key ingredient in antifreeze. FDA scientists said they tested 19 varieties of cigarettes, many of which contained fruit and candy flavors.

Public health advocates have complained the products are marketed toward young people and can serve as a "gateway" to tobacco smoking. Because electronic cigarettes are not covered by federal tobacco laws, they are often easier for young people to purchase.

Electronic cigarettes produce a nicotine mist absorbed directly into the lungs. Most can easily pass as a tobacco cigarette with slim white bodies and glowing amber tips. They even emit what look like puffs of white smoke.

Manufacturers have touted the products as a healthier alternative to smoking because no burning is involved, and there's no hazardous cocktail of cancer-causing chemicals.

Regulators said they already halted 50 shipments of electronic cigarettes at the border, but those actions have been challenged in federal court by manufacturers. The products are made primarily in China.

FDA officials declined to comment on whether they would take action against the two manufacturers whose products were tested. They also declined to identify the companies.

The agency did say it's "planning additional activities" to address safety issues with the products, which may include recalling products or issuing criminal sanctions.

http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/pre...tanders-confirmed-by-medical-study-101013.php

GAINESVILLE, FL, May 21, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- E-Cigarette Safety For Consumers And Bystanders Confirmed By Medical Study

One of the main arguments against e-cigarette products is that there is no scientific proof to support claims made by e-cigarette manufacturers and distributors that state the product is safe for its intended use and safe for bystanders. New research out of New Zealand would make that argument invalid.

The company, Health New Zealand, released its study (found here: http://www.healthnz.co.nz/coynews.htm) this past April at the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) conference. Their website states:

"Given that continued smoking of cigarettes carries a cumulative 1 in 2 death risk, the findings argue for:

1)less stringent regulation for very low-risk non-medicinal nicotine cigarette substitute products
2)the sale of this brand as a non-medicinal cigarette substitute, as its emissions have been tested"

The study suggested that because the operating temperature of an e-cigarette is only 5 to 10% of the temperature of a tobacco cigarette that they are, as a class of products, not likely to produce toxic substances in their mist that will affect bystanders.

Toxic emissions scores for the Ruyan brand of e-cigarettes tested compared to tobacco cigarette brands such as Marlboro revealed what most e-cigarette consumers already knew: tobacco cigarettes emit over 100 times more toxic chemicals than e-cigarettes do. From a list of more than 70 of toxic substances found in tobacco cigarette smoke, 0 of those toxicants were found in e-cigarette emissions.

Nicotine levels per puff were also analyzed: e-cigarette mist contains significantly less nicotine than tobacco cigarette smoke. Only 10% of the nicotine found in a normal puff from a tobacco cigarette was found in e-cigarette mist.

The conclusion that Health New Zealand came to was that e-cigarettes are cigarette substitutes and that if tobacco cigarette users switch to e-cigarettes that the health of both the smoker and the population will benefit. Although there is no way for any drug to be 100% safe, relative to tobacco cigarette emissions, e-cigarette emissions appear to be several hundred times safer. Health New Zealand also compared the e-cigarette to nicotine inhaler quitting aids, whose safety has never been questioned to the extent the safety of e-cigarettes has.

Since e-cigarettes does not reduce in size and it means smokers would not stop and continue to puff all day long.

Doesn't it reduces whatever benefit it gets from lower nicotine or toxic substances it has. lppl:biggrin::biggrin:

by your logic , nicotine patches dont work for ppl who wish to quit smoking ? by your own logic , should ban nicotine patches since it has nicotine in it ?
alternative for smokers , my friend . we are not asking non-smoker to start using e-cigar ...
