12-year-old raped by brother on mum’s orders
Compiled by SHAUN HO, ANN TAN

AFTER being raped by her brother on her mother’s orders, a 12-year-old girl was given over to a loan shark to settle her mother’s debts.

Since the incident 14 years ago, the victim, who only identified herself as Lili, has turned to prostitution to support herself for the past eight years, reported Harian Metro.

“I blame my mother for my situation now. I will never forgive her,” said Lili, 26.

She said her ordeal began after she went back to stay with her family after living with an aunt for nine years.

“After I was raped, my mother gave me to her loan shark who repeatedly raped me.

“I escaped and told my aunt what my mother and brother had done and she made a police report,” said Lili.

She added her family was in disarray because her mother had also “sold” four other sisters of her 10 siblings.

Lili was taken in by the Welfare Department after her mother and brother were arrested, but moved to Kuala Terengganu once she turned 18 and started to work as a prostitute.

She has three children, two of whom she gave away. She is currently expecting her fourth child.

She is caring for her third child but plans to put her fourth child up for adoption.

After living with aunt for 9 years, come back... you think the mother will treat her as her own again?

This mother also one kind.... When she is old... she will get her deserts.

This is where edu system failed.

School teachers should have been able to detect what was happening. Furthermore if she had that basic Sec 4 edu she could probably land a better job than that of pros.

When the family fails, the school system can help form a safety net for youth.

In China, university graduates also cannot find jobs. Why do you assume that education will be the magic bullet for gainful employment?

Broken family is always the root cause.
It is a real tragedy, what the mother has done.

Agree that it starts with the family unit. But when the family unit fails (just see the number of divorces) the state should step in with a basic safety net.

Countries that have a compulsory 10 years of education have the ability to form this type of safety net. The teachers spend a significant amount of time with a child and can detect if there are issues within the family (abuse, psychological trauma, truancy etc). The child is is defenceless when family unit fails.

In the end, it cost the state less money. If a child gets that minimum 10 years of education, he will, at the very least, be productive in society. He can read and write and can perform what is needed in modern day society. Failing which he/she will be forced to turn to other means of income (prostitution, crime) or will end up in the lower rungs of society. The cycle starts again as his kids will be at a disadvantage coming of a poor family.

Education is one of the best methods to break the cycle of poverty!

Of course, education is a MUST. Nobody deny the fact.
Education is a fundamental right.
But access to the very best education oppurtunities may not be
of much help if the child is traumatized in early childhood by
a broken family circumstances. Circumstances like bad company,
drugs and other issues can derail the kid's future.

Now a days, it is a common sight to see school kids in uniform
going about with a cigarette pack in their hands and using
expensive hand phones. Out from home late at night, missing
on weekends with their friends. Parents cannot control them
nor do the parents have time to monitor them.

Apparently poverty or lack of educational reach are not issues
with these kids. But how they will turn out later in life is a big
question mark.

Unfortuantely this happened in Malaysia where the safety net might have holes in it.

Pretty sure that when she was raped at 12, a teacher doing her job would have been able to sense something wrong. One thing would be sudden change of behaviour/failing marks.

Given the number of hours that teachers spend with their students, a little bit of training would allow the teacher to identify report potential problems.

The cost to society from those that fall through the net in terms of crime and low productivity is much higher than the cost to form a social safety net. In today's economy. anyone with less than Sec 4 edu is a drag on the economy.

In this case, if the teacher had been able to detect this child's rape at 12, and or know more about her social circumstances, authorities might have been able to come in and put her in some foster home or social institution and thereby save her from the ordeal that she had to suffer.

It is not fool proof but it does not take much to make it work. But really sad case.
