Why did ST interview only 12 people to draw their own conclusion?

Activists and MPs of the People's Action Party (PAP) have dismissed presidential election runner-up Tan Cheng Bock's charge that the narrow margin between him and president-elect Tony Tan reflected a division in the ruling party.

Eleven of the 12 people interviewed yesterday said the election results were not conclusive enough to back Dr Tan Cheng Bock's claims of a divide in the party and his assertion that its rank-and-file members had backed him while its leadership, like elected MPs and ministers, preferred Dr Tony Tan.

Said Joo Chiat MP Charles Chong: 'I think it's simplistic to draw this conclusion of a divide from the election results. Both Dr Tan Cheng Bock and Dr Tony Tan were acceptable to rank-and-file activists, too.'

Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Zaqy Mohamad agreed, saying the near-35 per cent support that Dr Tan Cheng Bock had garnered would include a large number of non-PAP members.

If there is indeed a split in the PAP, these Scums In White will never admit it publicly... Who in the right frame of mind, would dare to open their mouths and say so especially with that Old Man still around..???

What publication is that? Seems like the purpose of the interview is to reiterate the unity within PAP... why would anyone bother about this kind of survey. But the 12th guy will surely be viewed by PAP as the 12th angel... Lucifer

It's 12 out of 13 PAP activists & MP now. Yaacob said TT & TCB are both from PAP party, so only the people have splitted their support between the 2 former PAP MPs.

Dr Tony Tan has done a lot for Muslim community: Dr Yaacob

SINGAPORE: Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Dr Yaacob Ibrahim has congratulated president-elect Tony Tan, on behalf of the Muslim community.

Dr Yaacob, who is also the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, said Dr Tony Tan has done a lot for the Muslim community.

He was speaking to reporters after attending Hari Raya morning prayers at the Assyafaah Mosque in Sembawang.

"(Dr Tony Tan) he was here at this mosque in 2004, 2005, if I remember correctly, especially after 9/11, trying to reach out to the Muslim community, trying to explain what is it we can do together, with the country, with the nation- to strengthen social cohesion. So we're happy for this outcome, but we'll continue to work with whoever that's been elected - in this case Dr Tan - to build a stronger Singapore."

When asked whether the narrow win by Dr Tan in the presidential election revealed a political divide within the country, Dr Yaacob disagreed.

He said votes for Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock, both former PAP MPs, together made up 70 per cent of total votes.

"I think there's a strong support for the party in that sense. But it's clear that there are people who are divided
, as explained by the Prime Minister, that were basically having to decide between two very very good candidates which are Dr Tony Tan and Dr Tan Cheng Bock.

"But going forward, I think the process reflects a maturity for democracy, that we're able to agree to disagree. But most important thing is, as the Prime Minister has said now, we have to move forward and build the nation together."

The 11 happen to be the usual suspects e.g. Charlie who can always be relied on to say all the right things about his beloved party. This type of polling is a waste of time considering there are so many other activists in thebig party where many also like to play it safe. Some even hide in closets. After the very narrow PE win, the press now works extra hard to spin more positives about not only their man but also the party he belongs to. He may have resigned from the party but in spirit and in deed, the partying goes on!

1st sign: retiring of their veterans, while oldman sits comfortable in his emperor chair.
2nd sign: made GY sacrificial lamb in aljunied, when they couldve saved his skin by parachuting him elsewhere
3rd sign: only GCT came to console GY after the results disclosed, none of the rest bothered
4th sigh: ex cadre running for PE, intercepted by another ex cadre
5th sign: ex cadre talks of party division
