Singapore’s economy is sizzling. That's good news.

But since the labour market is tight, bosses have to offer higher pay to attract workers.

As labour, transport and other expenses rocket, companies will sell their products or services at a higher price to maintain profits.

So consumers end up paying more for the same item.

this is the typical attitude prevalent in inefficient, cheap-manpower-reliant economies. if you (government) increase my (business owner) cost, i pass the buck on to you (the consumer).

sg companies here have no motivation to innovate. why bother to invest in new and more efficient technologies to reduce costs, when they can simply "short-cut" and use cheaper(est) labour?

sg companies have developed a crutch mentality towards cheap labour. it is ironic that our founding leaders were so abhorrent to the notion of singaporeans developing a crutch mentality towards welfare, while here they have freely allowed our sg companies to become addicted to cheap labour, killing all incentive to innovate.

in countries like japan, where the numbers of foreign labourers are tightly controlled, local businesses are forced to innovate to survive. the proliferation of self serve machines is a manifestation of this "lack of" foreign labour. they use technology to overcome their limitations. and this attitude of adopting technology has entrenched itself into the entire economic system.

whether the japanese closed-door policy is successful or not is a separate issue. the point to note here is that without cheap labour, companies that use technology to innovate, can and will survive, if not thrive.

Singapore’s economy is sizzling. That's good news.

Our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose 18 per cent in the first half of this year, but it needs workers to meet an expanding economy with a greater demand. (Seen as a measure of the country's wealth, GDP refers to the value of goods and services produced.)

But if there is a shortage of foreign workers, be prepared to pay $10 for a plate of nasi lemak.

This year, we're looking at 13 to 15 per cent growth overall, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry. The last time the economy crossed 13 per cent was in 1972.

But since the labour market is tight, bosses have to offer higher pay to attract workers.

As labour, transport and other expenses rocket, companies will sell their products or services at a higher price to maintain profits.

Ponggol nasi lemak is doing it now you order rice point your finger at few items, fish, chicken wing, ikan bilis, etc, $7.50 for the nasi lemak, I think
the IRS should station someone with a counter to check the number of customers' s order x $$$= xxx$$$ than tax them. If not they are evading
taxes from the great profit!!!
