Telephone con men made off with $2.6 million in the first six months of this year, up from $1.9 million in the same period last year.

Police records show that someone falls prey to a phone scam every other day.

From January to June, there were 110 cases in which victims lost money - 21 per cent up from 91 cases in the same period last year.

A police spokesman said most of the scam calls come from overseas.
