A WOMAN is in coma and at least 28 others have been hospitalised after being hit by severe food poisoning after eating at a famous Indian rojak stall in Geylang Serai last Friday, reported The New Paper on Sunday.
More than 100 people sought hospital treatment after eating at the Rojak Geylang Serai stall at #01-320 at Geylang Serai market, which had previouly been featured on Makansutra.

TNP on Sunday said it will be closed for at least the next two days and its workers have been told to go for screening at the Communicable disease Centre. The National Environment Agency and Health Ministry carried out a joint inspection of the stall on Saturday morning and collected some samples for investigation.

OMG this is realy gross man. Thank god i stopped eating keling food for a very very long time.

Similar case in 1972 in the old Waterloo Street among the Indian rojak stalls. Over 200 customers went down with food poisoning of which 80 among them were warded. I was one of the victims. I was held under observation for a few hours before I was discharged. You have to experience it to know how excruciating the pain from food poisoning is.

food poisoning probably won't kill you but these fatty foods will clog up your arteries and kill you all the same.

Took me 20 years to get over it. Then I chanced upon the rojak stalls in West Coast Drive hawker centre, went back into it. Food is like pussy. You get kicked by it, you swear off it until the next time you try it!:p

You never know what they put inside their gravy or curry. Before you patron such Indian foodstalls, check their surrounding, like kitchen, utensils and plate and their staffs. That will give you an impression. Especially roti plata stalls. Check the condition of their curry, by looking you can tell if its fresh. Nowaday I only eat roti plata at new shopping malls like the one in AMK hub and Thomson Plaza. Pay a little more for cleaniless.

but to go into coma is a bit amazing. I had terrible food poisoning when I was overseas once. Fever, diarrhea etc. You name it, I had it. Spent one whole day in my hotel room watching TV and going online in between shitting sessions. :(

After this news all Indian Rojak stall/shop would have to close shop business will down by at least 50%. Can see those worker using bare hand to touch/pick up the rojak, really dirty. Last time always eat but give up few year ago.

the figure is much higher
there are about 70 reported cases in CHG alone..

I heard about this when I was a kid. My mom banned me from eating Indian rojak until I was in my teens.

Food hygiene wasn't such a big deal in those days. Our stomach constitution must had been built like a tank! To think that one of the present victims is in a coma, I wonder if the 1972 case's level of virulence would not have killed half of them all!

So have you continued eating indian rojak since 1972?

I can understand if normal rojak (with hei ko) stalls fail hygiene standards since it is uncooked...

But isn't Indian rojak deep fried before serving? Wouldn't high temperature kill off most bacteria?

It's the sauce! In the 1972 incident, my cousin who was with me but was not as badly affected told me he saw the young Indian girl who served us had a sore near the tip of her thumb which might had touch the "kuah" (sauce)!:(
