The interesting part of this character is that it originates from a Chinese novel partly in promotion on Buddhism and partly a criticism of the Government at the time.

The character itself was not original neither, it was borrowed from the monkey character from the Indian famous novel Ramayana.

“西游记”其实带有“吴承恩”本人在实际遭遇上的不平抒发与寄托，表面上是个以取经为主轴的小说，中间穿插孙悟空与猪八戒间的逗趣幽默，但实质上是对当时明朝的政治环境的感叹与影射、暗喻。

所谓的暗喻、影射，小说中的主角“孙悟空”被设定为猴，而非人，意味着：虽有近似人的形体，但却不是人，依然被视为被异类来看待，这表示在明朝为官者，良官虽有官职官位，但却被其他贪官群所排挤、另待。此一戏码的真正背后含意是：明朝各地方多有欺压百性的小官或土豪劣绅，这些小官或土豪劣绅的恶行一旦被获知并即将定罪问斩时，就会有皇亲或朝廷高官前来求情，事实上这些敢在地方为恶者，本就与这些皇亲或朝廷高官有着紧密关系，所以才有恃无恐地为恶。

小说中不断在强调这种难以正法、难以将恶根绝的无奈。

The metaphor applies even for Singapore today where you can see that the ruling party (as Tang San Zhang) continues to grab the lime light on any success while blaming the people (Sun Wu Kong) for any failure. They are totally clueless on how to save the country (like the comments SM Goh made on the student's question on why he should defend the country) and yet want absolute control on the people (through "controlled" election).
