Borussia Monchengladbach will not ´turn a blind eye´ to crowd trouble

17 February 2015

790324header.jpg

The German Football Association will have the full cooperation of Borussia Monchengladbach in tackling crowd trouble.

Borussia Monchengladbach insist they will not turn a blind eye to the crowd trouble that marred their 1-0 home victory over local rivals Cologne on Saturday.

Tens of fans donning white boiler suits emerged from a section of the ground housing away supporters after Granit Xhaka had netted a stoppage-time winner for the hosts.

Flares were also hurled onto the playing surface during the Bundesliga clash, before the offenders made their way from the pitch as police closed in.

Cologne have since moved to ban the Boyz fan club and withdraw their status as an official supporters' club, and Borussia managing director Stephan Schippers says he will cooperate fully with the German Football Federation (DFB).

"We are part of an ongoing process," he said. "The DFB has asked us to give an opinion on the incidents. We will do that so the DFB can get a full picture of what exactly happened.

"The actions originated from the Cologne fan block. However, we do not want to give the impression that we do not mind the whole incident and that it does not concern us. That would be turning a blind eye.

"We also need to learn the lessons from these events and consider whether and, if so, how the rules might be better in the future."

Hjulmand sacked by Mainz

17 February 2015

790307header.jpg

Kasper Hjulmand has been removed as Mainz coach with the club sitting 14th in the Bundesliga.

Mainz have sacked coach Kasper Hjulmand after less than a year in charge.

The Bundesliga outfit are on a run of one win in 13 matches in the league, although that victory was a thumping 5-0 triumph over Paderborn.

That sequence has seen Mainz slip to 14th in the top flight, one point clear of the relegation zone, and a 4-2 defeat at fellow strugglers Borussia Dortmund on Friday turned out to be the final straw.

Under-23 coach Martin Schmidt has stepped into the void left by Dane Hjulmand and will take training on Tuesday.

"Those that know our club philosophy and the way we work know how hard it was to make this decision," said sporting director Christian Heidel. "Kasper Hjulmand is a footballing expert, who will without doubt improve and develop teams going forward.

"However, there have been a lot of factors that have led to our negative run with only one win in 13 games and we've slipped towards the relegation zone.

"We felt that we needed a change of manager as we are now involved in a relegation battle."

New coach Schmidt added: "It's obviously a big step for me to be taking charge of a Bundesliga team.

"But I don't feel that I'm being thrown in at the deep end because last year I worked closely with the team and the coaches.

"I know the procedures and I'm prepared."

Mainz finished seventh under Thomas Tuchel last season, but struggled to replicate that form following the arrival of Hjulmand from Nordsjaelland in May.

Mainz next face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Gebre Selassie agrees Bremen extension

18 February 2015

790788header.jpg

Theodor Gebre Selassie has put pen to paper on a new contract at Werder Bremen.

Werder Bremen defender Theodor Gebre Selassie has signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract, the club have confirmed.

The 28-year-old right-back joined Bremen from Slovan Liberec in 2012 and has gone on to make 69 Bundesliga appearances.

Gebre Selassie had less than 18 months left to run on his current deal and the extension ties him to the club until June 2018.

And sporting director Thomas Eichin was relieved to secure the long-term future of the Czech Republic full-back.

"Theo is a very important player for us and an extraordinary person who commands great confidence within the team," Eichin told Bremen's official website.

"The early extension of the contract is another building block on the Werder road, which we have successfully embarked. We are pleased to work together with Theo for a long time."

Gebre Selassie added: "Since my first day in Bremen and at the club I have felt very well.

"The last few months have shown that we have made good development. I am still a part of the team and together with the fans and everyone here at the club I hope to continue on this path."

Time to lift the gloom around Dortmund, says Klopp

18 February 2015

790957header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund need to get rid of "guilty conscience" to enable them to pull away from the Bundesliga relegation zone, says Jurgen Klopp.

Jurgen Klopp has called on Borussia Dortmund to lift the gloom around Signal Iduna Park as they seek to climb away from trouble in the Bundesliga.

A woeful first half of the season saw Klopp's men tumble to the foot of the table, yet they have started positively since the winter break with only one defeat in 2015.

Dortmund face a relegation dogfight on Friday when they head to bottom club Stuttgart, with both clubs knowing the significance of claiming three points.

Victory over Mainz last Friday lifted Dortmund out of the relegation zone, and Klopp is focused on following up that win.

He said: "We want to remain in this league and I want to make it clear as early as possible that I am not worried about the other [relegation].

"We've had a guilty conscience for long enough now. We have to start playing positively.

"In Stuttgart it has never been easy, but for us winning is definitely a possibility. This is a real relegation battle."

Klopp's plans could be thwarted by a spate of flu at the club heading into the match, with Erik Durm, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Jeremy Dudziak, Mats Hummels and Ciro Immobile all falling ill this week.

Immobile faking illness to avoid Juventus, jokes Klopp

946652_heroa.jpg

By Mark Doyle
Feb 18, 2015 17:24:03

The Italy international was handed his professional debut by the Bianconeri, whom BVB face in the Champions League next week

Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has joked that striker Ciro Immobile is faking illness at the moment in order to avoid facing former club Juventus.

BVB have been rocked by a flu outbreak, which has sidelined Erik Durm, Mats Hummels and Jakub Błaszczykowski - all of whom could miss Friday's Bundesliga trip to Stuttgart.

Immobile has also been feeling unwell but Klopp humorously implied that the Italy international's illness could have something to do with next week's Champions League last-16 first-leg clash in Turin.

“In his case, I have to determine if it’s really about his fitness or the fact that we are playing Juventus," the BVB boss joked.

“Erik Durm, though, is able to train again after a two-week break. But we can’t think of letting him play yet.

"'Kuba' also got heavily infected, while Mats Hummels didn’t feel good on Friday and hasn't returned to training yet.

"It’s not clear if any of them will be back for the Stuttgart game."

Even though Klopp does not want to take any risks with the flu-stricken quartet, he insists that he has no intention of picking an under-strength side for Friday.

Indeed, while 15th-placed BVB have hauled themselves out of the Bundesliga drop zone courtesy of back-to-back wins over Freiburg and Mainz, Klopp says they remain very much in danger of relegation.

“We will play with our strongest team against Stuttgart and see afterwards who is available against Juve, because every match is totally important," the coach added.

“The pressure on us is still very high and we want to remain in this league.

"However, I want to make it clear as early as possible that I am not worried about the other alternative [relegation].

"We've had a guilty conscience for long enough now. We have to start playing positively.

“We feel we are mainly confronted with positive topics recently but it is our responsibility to stay focused.

"We don’t have to talk about stability; we need to show it on the field.

“We still have problems, but we are dealing with them better."

However, Klopp is expecting a relegation dogfight against Stuttgart, not least because of the poor state of the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

"In Stuttgart, it has never been easy, but for us winning is definitely a possibility," he said.

“But Stuttgart will fight for a better situation with everything they have.

“It will be a true relegation battle, totally intensive – on a bad field.

"But you have to deal with that. We deliberately trained on a bad field this week.

“You have to be focused and use the bad field to your advantage. It’s about being prepared."

Stuttgart v Borussia Dortmund: Juve tie no distraction, says Klopp

18 February 2015

790958header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund do not have one eye on next week's glamour tie with Juventus and are fully focused on Stuttgart, says coach Jurgen Klopp.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted he is not distracted by Borussia Dortmund's UEFA Champions League clash with Juventus and will play his strongest team against the Bundesliga's bottom club Stuttgart.

Resurgent Dortmund visit the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday - just four days before travelling to Turin for the first leg of their last-16 tie with the Italian champions.

Dortmund infamously endured a nightmarish first half of the campaign, but have picked up of late and Klopp could be forgiven for being tempted to leave a number of his key men out against Stuttgart - who prop up the table having not won since mid-December.

But the coach has ruled out that prospect as he hopes to build on Dortmund's recent momentum, which sees them looking to record a third straight league victory for the first time this season.

"We will field the best team against Stuttgart - I won't rest anyone for the Juve match," Klopp told his pre-match media conference on Wednesday.

Despite his determination to play his first-choice XI, Klopp could be undermined by a bout of flu that appears to be spreading through his squad.

Erik Durm and Jakub Blaszczykowski are definitely sidelined with the virus, while captain Mats Hummels and youngster Jeremy Dudziak are also struggling.

Striker Ciro Immobile is available after recovering from his illness, though, and Klopp may also be able to call on Sven Bender (knee) and Sebastian Kehl (shoulder), who have returned to training.

Klopp went on to say Dortmund are improving quickly as the season heads into its final stages, and called on his players to rediscover the vibrant, fearless style of play that has made them one of Europe's best and most respected teams in recent years.

"We still have problems but we are dealing with them better and better," he added.

"We've had a guilty conscience for long enough - now we have to start playing positively."

In stark contrast to Dortmund's morale-boosting, come-from-behind 4-2 victory over Mainz last time out, struggling Stuttgart were undone by Sebastian Rudy's 93rd-minute winner as they went down 2-1 at Hoffenheim.

Huub Stevens' side have won just four Bundesliga games all season, although a surprise victory on Friday would lift Stuttgart to within a point of 15th-placed Dortmund.

However, Klopp's plan to field his best team, which is sure to include star man Marco Reus, will not be welcomed by Stevens.

Reus scored a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last season, as Dortmund came from two goals down to win 3-2.

Bundesliga Preview: Schmidt to make changes, Bayern tipped for success

18 February 2015

791008header.jpg

Following Bayer Leverkusen's 5-4 home defeat by Wolfsburg, coach Roger Schmidt will be changing things for their Augsburg clash.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt is set to punish under-performers by ringing the changes ahead of Saturday's trip to Bundesliga surprise package Augsburg.

Schmidt's side lost 5-4 at home to second-placed Wolfsburg in their last league outing, with the hosts finding themselves 3-0 down after half an hour, prompting the coach to make all three of his substitutions at half-time.

The introduction of Simon Rolfes, Josip Drmic and Julian Brandt helped Leverkusen go on to score four times in the second half, yet their efforts ultimately counted for little as Bas Dost's fourth goal of the day consigned the hosts to a first home defeat of the season in stoppage time following a red card for Emir Spahic.

Schmidt felt that his half-time tweaking was integral to avoiding an embarrassment and, after hauling off the disappointing Hakan Calhanoglu, Stefan Kiessling and Lars Bender at the interval, the former Red Bull Salzburg tactician will be making changes for the Augsburg match.

"It [making three changes at half-time] was about the dignity of the team," he told reporters.

"I have increased confidence in some players [after the second-half display]. Now, other players have shown what they can do. The cards will be reshuffled."

Champions Bayern Munich obliterated Hamburg 8-0 at the weekend and will be looking to produce another ruthless display at Paderborn on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's men go into the weekend eight points clear of Wolfsburg and will be strong favourites to emerge victorious again, with Paderborn winning just one of their last 11 in the league.

Wolfsburg, meanwhile, will be aiming to extend their unbeaten run to 10 league matches when they host Hertha Berlin on Sunday, just three days after entertaining Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Europa League.

Borussia Monchengladbach also face a tricky European test on Thursday, travelling to Europa League holders Sevilla, and that clash will be followed by a visit to Hamburg on Sunday.

Lucien Favre's team are enjoying a fine season domestically and a victory will see them consolidate their place in third, ahead of Roberto Di Matteo's Schalke, who have risen from 11th since the Italian's appointment in October.

Di Matteo will be preparing his side for a potentially tough day as they welcome a resurgent Werder Bremen going for a sixth triumph in a row, while the Gelsenkirchen-based outfit's local rivals Borussia Dortmund go to Stuttgart in Friday's solitary fixture.

Dortmund have endured a turbulent campaign and sit just a point above the bottom three, though success on Saturday will see them rack up three successive league wins for the first time this season.

After replacing the sacked Kasper Hjulmand, Martin Schmidt begins his spell in charge of the Mainz first team with a Rhine-Main derby clash at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, while Hannover and Hoffenheim head to Koln and Freiburg, respectively in Saturday's other meetings.

Klopp warns of Dortmund complacency

19 February 2015

791467header.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has warned his Borussia Dortmund players against complacency ahead of Friday's trip to Stuttgart.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp was worried by the relief shown by some of his players during the 4-2 win over Mainz and has warned against complacency this week.

Klopp's side fought back 1-0 down to lead 2-1 but, after conceding an equaliser, needed two late goals to continue their recovery following a dismal first half to the season.

However, Klopp was worried by the relief his players showed after taking the lead for the first time and warned against it ahead of Friday's trip to Stuttgart.

"It is okay to be happy. The problem is that everyone is so relieved. That is a huge difference because you stay relaxed," explained the Dortmund boss.

"You saw it after we scored the second against Mainz. I saw three players who looked up to the sky. That is not a joke. It looked like they thought 'okay, we did it'.

"But we have not accomplished anything until the game is over. Of course I understand the reaction because the pressure is immense but in this relaxed state we lost our compactness and allowed Mainz back into the match."

The 2011 and 2012 Bundesliga champions have moved out of the relegation zone thanks to back-to-back wins but remain 15th after a disappointing campaign.

While his side are now on something of an upward curve, Klopp is eager not to look too far ahead.

"I do not want to think about the result of the season at this point, because I don't know where our journey leads us," he added.

"I am very optimistic. Of course, the last two matches were good for me. But I know that this is just one side of the coin."

Thiago back in Bayern training

19 February 2015

791438header.jpg

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alacantara is back in training with the club following a long-term knee injury.

Thiago Alacantara returned to light training with Bayern Munich on Thursday as part of his rehabilitation from a long-term knee injury.

The Spanish midfielder underwent surgery on the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in October and has not played this season.

However, the 23-year-old took part in indivudual training at Bayern's Sabener Strasse base on Thursday, having returned to Germany from Spain a day earlier.

"In the sunshine and with high spirits Thiago recorded his rehab training in Munich on Thursday," a statement on Bayern's website explained.

"One day after his return to Sabener Strasse, the Spaniard completed a good hour-long run on the grass and sweated further in the Performance Centre."

Paderborn v Bayern Munich: Sammer demands more from champions

19 February 2015

791437header.jpg

Bayern Munich out to bounce back from goalless UEFA Champions League draw at Shakhtar Donetsk against struggling Paderborn.

They may have won their last Bundesliga game 8-0, but Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has called for improvement ahead of their trip to Paderborn.

In proof just how impeccably high the standards at Bayern are, Sammer has demanded the side gets better after a goalless UEFA Champions League draw at Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Most clubs would be pleased with an away draw and Pep Guardiola's men now know victory at home will be enough to progress to the last eight of Europe's premier club competition.

But not Bayern, with Sammer not in a mood to be complacent following their stalemate.

"Everyone can see we have room to improve before we reach peak form, and that's the message for the next few days," Sammer told the club's official website after the Shakhtar draw.

"We have to shift up a gear. Our performance today was okay, but it wasn't great ... we need to improve."

A return to winning ways is more than likely for a Bayern side who sit eight points clear of Wolfsburg at the top of the table.

Bayern thrashed Hamburg last Saturday, with Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze all scoring doubles. The win was the club's biggest in over 30 years and will have Paderborn's defence on high alert.

After a bright start, Paderborn's maiden Bundesliga season looks like ending in a relegation fight.

They hauled themselves two points clear of the bottom three with a 2-1 win at Hannover last time out - their first league victory since November.

Paderborn were on top of the Bundesliga before losing 4-0 to Bayern in September.

Gotze scored twice in that victory, while Muller and Robert Lewandowski also netted as the sides met in the Bundesliga for the first time.

Schalke breathe sigh of relief over Huntelaar injury

971962_heroa.jpg

Feb 19, 2015 07:43:03

The Dutchman's injury is not as severe as initially feared after he underwent a series of tests on Wednesday night

Schalke have been boosted by the news Klaas-Jan Huntelaar didn't suffered a broken fibula in his side's 2-0 Champions League round-of-16 defeat against Real Madrid.

Huntelaar was substituted in the 33rd minute after a collision with Madrid defender Raphael Varane and initial reports on social media claimed the Netherlands international had been diagnosed with a fractured fibula in his right leg after being taken to a local hospital.

However, Schalke announced after the first leg of the tie that the 31-year-old had watched the end of the match at the Veltins Arena, describing his injury as a "severe bruise".

"Huntelaar suffered a severe bruise. He was back at the Veltins Arena by the final whistle," the Bundesliga outfit wrote on their official Twitter account.

Roberto Di Matteo confirmed that Huntelaar had not broken his leg, although Schalke's coach was unsure when the prolific attacker might be available to play again.

"Nothing's broken [but it is] very painful. We can't say how long he'll be ruled out," the former Chelsea manager said at his post-match press conference.

Huntelaar is currently sidelined in the Bundesliga due to suspension after he was handed a four-match ban following his red card in the win over Hannover.

The Dutchman therefore missed the games against Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt and will serve the last match of his ban at the weekend versus Werder Bremen.

Stuttgart 2 Borussia Dortmund 3: Klopp´s men make it three in a row

20 February 2015

792326header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund's revival goes on to keep Stuttgart firmly rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund made it three Bundesliga wins in a row for the first time this season with a 3-2 success at rock-bottom Stuttgart on Friday.

Jurgen Klopp's side have found life difficult so far this term and, prior to their recent run, had only registered four wins in 19 league matches, leaving them bottom of the table.

However, Dortmund have shown signs of turning things around of late and climb to 10th with their win in Stuttgart, ahead of the weekend's programme of fixtures.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for the visitors after 25 minutes at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, but that lead was cancelled out when Florian Klein netted from the penalty spot seven minutes later.

Ilkay Gundogan restored Dortmund's advantage from close range after a clever lay-off from Shinji Kagawa, before Marco Reus pounced on a defensive error late on to apparently put the result beyond doubt.

Georg Niedermeier, who had won the penalty in the first half, pulled a goal back in stoppage time, exposing defensive gaps that Dortmund must plug ahead of Tuesday's trip to Juventus in the UEFA Champions League.

Klopp had his players training on a deliberately poor pitch ahead of the trip to Stuttgart, for whom Timo Werner became the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances

However bizarre the approach, it looked to be paying off in the early stages - Kevin Kampl drawing a save from Sven Ulreich with a well-struck effort in the 11th minute.

Ulreich had to be on his guard again two minutes later when he dived to keep out a dangerous Gundogan header from a Marcel Schmelzer free-kick, before Aubameyang had a goal correctly ruled out for offside.

The Gabon international had good reason to celebrate in the 25th minute though, when Kagawa's heavy touch in controlling a Marco Reus pass fell perfectly into his path, allowing him to slot home the opener.

However, that lead did not last long, with Klein grabbing Stuttgart's first at home since October from the spot after Nuri Sahin was deemed to have brought down Niedermeier in the penalty area.

Having played a role in Aubameyang's opener, Kagawa was again central as he found Gundogan with a neat flick six minutes before the interval and the Germany midfielder prodded home a second for Dortmund.

Kagawa almost added his own name to the scoresheet in the 53rd minute, but shot straight at Ulreich from a tight angle, before Sahin tested the goalkeeper with a fizzing effort from 20 yards.

Reus raced onto Timo Baumgartl's woefully short backpass to put Dortmund into a two-goal lead, but Niedermeier converted a corner soon after to keep them sweating through stoppage time.

However, Stuttgart could not find an equaliser and remain rooted to the foot of the table, with players appearing to apologise to fans after the full-time whistle.

Dortmund defence below par - Gundogan

20 February 2015

792392header.jpg

Borussia Dortmund preserved their winning run on Friday, but they are not content with their rate of conceding goals in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund secured a third Bundesliga win in a row on Friday, but goal-scorers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ilkay Gundogan said their defending had to improve.

Jurgen Klopp's men have bounced back from falling to the foot of the German top-flight standings, most recently beating Stuttgart 3-2 on the road.

Aubameyang and Gundogan scored either side of a Florian Klein penalty for Stuttgart, before Marco Reus all but sealed the three points for Dortmund late on.

Georg Niedermeier pulled one back for the home side, but it proved in vain as Dortmund continued their climb up the table.

Midfielder Gundogan said conceding multiple goals in their past two games was cause for concern.

"We've got to be somewhat self critical today despite the win," Gundogan said, as reported by Bundesliga's official website.

"We're getting ourselves in front in games, but haven't necessarily been able to keep countering the way we like to and then we end up conceding sloppy goals, like we did tonight from a late corner, which we should never allow to happen."

Gabon international Aubameyang said he was upbeat given his personal output - four goals in three games - but stressed their leaky defence must be addressed before their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Juventus, starting Tuesday.

"I've got the backing from the coach [Klopp] and being shifted into the central striker position is opening up more chances for me to find the net," the former Saint-Etienne man said.

"We're fine when it comes to scoring goals right now, but we have to maintain our concentration at the back against Juventus.

"Today we slacked off a little and can't afford that to happen on Tuesday. We're on the right track at present and we've just got to keep pushing forward."

Stuttgart have suffered due to Dortmund's recent rise, falling to last spot.

Earlier in February, Dortmund players Roman Weidenfeller and Mats Hummels reasoned with their fans following a defeat at home to Augsburg - but it was Stuttgart's turn to plea with their supporters on Friday.

"We went to talk to the fans after the game because we needed to demonstrate that we care and know that they're the most important part of this club," goal-scorer Klein said.

"Obviously we know it's difficult against Dortmund, you don't have a lot of time on the ball and it's a shame that after I equalised from the spot we weren't able to hold on until half-time.

"We made too many mistakes and you can't win games against teams like this if you do that. We have to stay positive."

Klopp: We deserved our win

21 February 2015

792446header.jpg

A third straight win - a 3-2 victory over Stuttgart - was what Borussia Dortmund deserved according to Jurgen Klopp.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp insists his team were deserved winners in their 3-2 victory over Stuttgart on Friday.

Klopp's struggling team made it three straight Bundesliga wins, climbing into 10th and four points clear of the relegation zone.

Goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus helped Dortmund to their win.

Klopp had no doubt his side were worthy of their three points.

"I think we deserved the win today," he told a media conference afterwards.

"Looking into the statistics, we had five corners, Stuttgart two. And they scored twice from them.

"In many other moments we played really well. We tried to put a lot of pressure on our opponent. That is why many of their balls flew off of the field which didn't help them feel more comfortable.

"When your opponent isn't really self-confident in the first place you have to try that, so they don't get into the match, and we achieved this quite well."

Florian Klein's 32nd-minute penalty had drawn Stuttgart level, but Dortmund were ahead at half-time thanks to Gundogan.

Klopp said the response to the equaliser was crucial, and he rued not making more of their counter-attacking opportunities in the second half.

"The team showed a good reaction to the equaliser and it was a nice goal to make it 2-1," he said.

"In the second half, well you saw that, we had a lot of counter-attacks that we couldn't take advantage of.

"Then, on the other side, Stuttgart gave us the opportunity to score the third goal and for a change we took it.

"Then we took our foot of the pedal, and again it was a corner, a really unnecessary one I think, when we didn't defend well enough, we lost one fight for a header and after that the goal is inescapable."

Paderborn 0 Bayern Munich 6: Champions hand out another beating

21 February 2015

792665header.jpg

Bayern Munich opened up an 11-point lead at top of Bundesliga as Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben shone in 6-0 win over 10-man Paderborn.

Bayern Munich made it 14 goals in two Bundesliga matches on Saturday with a clinical 6-0 thrashing of 10-man Paderborn.

Pep Guardiola's men were held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

However, the German champions got back on the goal trail at the Benteler Arena as they followed up last weekend’s 8-0 league victory over Hamburg with another resounding triumph.

Robert Lewandowski marked his recall to the starting XI, in place of Mario Gotze, with two goals in a first half of few chances.

And Bayern picked off the hosts almost at will following the dismissal of Paderborn's Florian Hartherz in the 62nd minute, Arjen Robben scoring twice either side of Franck Ribery and substitute Mitchell Weiser also finding the net.

Paderborn remain in a position of peril near the foot of the table, while Bayern hold an 11-point advantage at the summit ahead of second-placed Wolfsburg's meeting with Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

The visitors dominated possession from the outset, but were unable to fashion a clear sight of goal early on as Paderborn, adopting a 5-4-1 formation, packed men behind the ball and defended with discipline.

A 12th-minute counter-attack from Paderborn ended with Alban Meha sending an ambitious long-range effort narrowly wide of Manuel Neuer's left-hand post.

However, Andre Breitenreiter's side fell behind 12 minutes later as Lewandowski converted Bayern's first chance of the game.

Robben was the creator, cleverly flicking on David Alaba's pass with a deft touch that enabled Lewandowski to bare down on goal unchallenged before placing his finish through the legs of goalkeeper Lukas Kruse.

Lewandowski also accepted the next opportunity that came Bayern's way, prodding home a Ribery cross at the near post eight minutes before half-time after a shot from Thomas Muller had deflected into the path of the Frenchman.

Neuer was called upon to make a routine save from the recalled Lukas Rupp prior to the interval, while Robben saw a shot flash wide at the other end.

Holger Badstuber, who lined up alongside Jerome Boateng in the heart of Bayern's defence following the latter's recent suspension, made a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Elias Kachunga as Paderborn started the second half brightly.

There was little else to concern Bayern, however, and their afternoon became much easier when Hartherz clumsily felled Robben as the forward attempted to convert a left-wing cross, earning a red card as a result.

Robben made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick and a fourth goal arrived in the 72nd minute when Ribery drilled home a first-time shot from 15 yards.

Weiser added a fifth two minutes after his 76th-minute introduction, lobbing Kruse for his first Bundesliga goal, and Robben capped off a thoroughly one-sided fixture by applying a finish to Ribery's cross with four minutes remaining.

Bundesliga Review: Bayern smash Paderborn, Augsburg keeper Hitz late leveller

21 February 2015

792877header.jpg

Paderborn suffered a 6-0 drubbing by Bayern Munich and goalkeeper Marwin Hitz scored to deny Bayer Leverkusen a win at Augsburg on Saturday.

Bayern Munich hammered 10-man Paderborn 6-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday, while Bayer Leverkusen were denied by a stoppage-time equaliser from Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz.

Pep Guardiola's men were held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday, though they were back to their ruthless best at the Benteler Arena, following up last week's 8-0 thrashing of Hamburg impressively.

Robert Lewandowski marked his recall to the starting XI, in place of Mario Gotze, with two goals in a first half of few chances.

However, Bayern picked off the hosts almost at will following the dismissal of Florian Hartherz in the 62nd minute, Arjen Robben netting either side of Franck Ribery and substitute Mitchell Weiser also finding the net, putting the champions 11 points clear at the top.

Leverkusen missed out on the chance to go above fourth-placed Schalke, as they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by fellow European hopefuls Augsburg.

Following a 5-4 home defeat by Wolfsburg last time out, coach Roger Schmidt revealed that he would be making changes to his team and that approach paid off after just eight minutes, as Josip Drmic – in for the dropped Stefan Kiessling – put the visitors ahead.

Although half-time substitute Caiuby levelled for the hosts just before the hour mark, Stefan Reinartz struck six minutes from time to seemingly hand Leverkusen a valuable away win.

But Augsburg keeper Hitz stabbed home in the fourth minute of stoppage time, leaving the two teams side-by-side in the Bundesliga table.

Schalke retained their place in the final UEFA Champions League place despite drawing 1-1 at home to in-form Werder Bremen, who rescued a point thanks to Sebastian Prodl's equaliser just before the end.

Martin Schmidt's start to life as Mainz coach began in fine fashion, as his men beat local rivals Eintracht Frankfurt 3-1 in the Rhine-Main derby, with Carlos Zambrano's late red card compounding a disappointing day for the visitors.

Hannover left Koln with a 1-1 draw in spite of Joao Pereira's red card at the death, while towards the wrong end of the table, Freiburg moved out of the bottom two thanks to a 1-1 draw at home to Hoffenheim.

Bundesliga Review: In-form Dost´s double sees off Hertha, Gladbach snatch a point

22 February 2015

In-form striker Bas Dost took his tally to nine goals in his last four games as Wolfsburg beat Bundesliga strugglers Hertha Berlin 2-1.

Bas Dost's rich vein of form continued as the Wolfsburg striker's double secured a 2-1 Bundesliga win over relegation-threatened Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

Dost scored both goals in a 2-0 UEFA Europa League win over Sporting Lisbon on Thursday, after helping himself to four games in a sensational 5-4 win at Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, and Hertha were the latest team to suffer at the hands of the former Heerenveen man.

The clinical Dost needed only 10 minutes to open the scoring, pouncing from close range after Andre Schurrle had set him up.

Second-bottom Hertha are in desperate need of points as they battle to avoid the drop and they were level when Justin Schieber scored his first goal in six games on the half-hour mark.

Wolfsburg were not to be denied victory, though, as Dost was on hand to scored his ninth goal in his last four games - and 12th in his last seven - after Luiz Gustavo's strike rattled the post.

Victory for Dieter Hecking's side ensured they are eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich and 10 clear of third-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, who could only draw 1-1 at struggling Hamburg.

Hamburg were hammered 8-0 at Bayern last weekend and their chances of pulling off a surprise win on Sunday were not helped when Ivica Olic was withdrawn due to injury after only 25 minutes.

Patrick Herrmann almost put Gladbach in front with a volley that rattled the post and Lucien Favre's men looked to be heading for defeat when Zoltan Stieber put the home side in front 17 minutes from time.

Hamburg were unable to hold on for three precious points, though, as substitute Branimir Hrgota headed home a corner two minutes into stoppage time to salvage a point.

Breitenreiter: Bayern are the best in the world

21 February 2015

Paderborn coach Andre Breitenreiter hailed Bayern Munich as "the best team in the world" following their 6-0 win at the Benteler Arena.

After seeing his side dismantled by Bayern Munich on Saturday, Paderborn coach Andre Breitenreiter lauded the Bundesliga champions as "the best team in the world".

Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben both scored twice as Bayern romped to a 6-0 triumph at the Benteler Arena.

Lewandowski's brace came in a first half of few chances, but Pep Guardiola's men picked off their opponents with ease in the second period following the 62nd-minute dismissal of Florian Hartherz for a foul on Robben that resulted in a penalty.

A magnanimous Breitenreiter acknowledged his side were left with little hope once they were down to 10 men.

"The penalty was the decisive situation," said Breitenreiter. "After that there’s no defending against a team that moves the ball so well.

"We've played the best team in the world with the best coach in the world."

Guardiola also opted to praise the opposition, insisting Paderborn have the necessary quality to avoid an immediate return to Germany's second tier.

Breitenreiter's side are a point above the relegation play-off place in 15th, having won just once since November 2.

Yet Guardiola said: "We took it very seriously indeed and let them have very few chances. It was hard work against a back five.

"I said beforehand that I thought Paderborn would stay in the Bundesliga, and now I'm sure of it."

Robben's two goals lifted him clear of Eintracht Frankfurt's Alexander Meier at the top of the Bundesliga scoring charts.

The Netherlands international now has 16 league goals to his name this term and thanked team-mate Thomas Muller for allowing him to take the penalty that brought his first against Paderborn.

"The penalty was a gift from Thomas. We talked about it over lunch before the game," Robben told Bayern's official website.

"Basti [Bastian Schweinsteiger] said: 'You're among the leaders in the scoring charts, so if we get a penalty you should take it.'

"I reminded Thomas about that and he let me have the penalty, so I want to say thank you to Thomas.”

Goalkeeper Hitz unlikely goal in Bundesliga

21 February 2015

Goalkeeper Marwin Hitz was the unlikely hero for Augsburg on Saturday, scoring to earn a late 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Augsburg had goalkeeper Marwin Hitz to thank for their 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, as he scored a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser.

Venturing forward with the game deep into stoppage time and the hosts 2-1 down, Swiss stopper Hitz proved the hero when he turned the ball home after a ricochet off Simon Rolfes had fallen into his path.

Hitz had been out of action since mid-November with a serious knee injury and he was at fault early in the game when he fumbled an initial effort from Josip Drmic, and the striker converted the rebound.

Substitute Caiuby equalised after the break before Leverkusen looked to have won it when Stefan Reinartz grabbed their second with six minutes left.

But Hitz had the last say to ensure a point apiece, as Augsburg and Leverkusen stayed fifth and sixth in the Bundesliga respectively.

Bundesliga Review: Bayern smash Paderborn, Augsburg keeper Hitz late leveller

21 February 2015
