‘Not a single interview’: Over-50 professionals say job search has been tough despite accepting lower pay
A 2020 study by payroll and HR firm ADP found that in S'pore, workers over 55 or under 24 are far more likely to face age discrimination compared to their counterparts in other regions. Several users in the discussion thread agreed with these findings, with one individual saying, “S'pore is an ageist society… For those above 40, if they’re laid off, it will be very difficult to get another job role.” Another commented, “Yeah, it’s pretty common these days for folks over 50 to have a tough time getting responses. Age bias is still a thing.”

By 50, you are suppose to be a expert and start your own business, consultancy, advisory, investment....

Not everyone is cut out to do business; this is widely supported by industry realities. Entrepreneurship is less about a specific personality type and more about the capacity to handle intense pressure, extreme uncertainty, consistent failure and the need to constantly learn and adapt. An estimated 80% of businesses fail within the first 3 years, making the journey and its inherent risks, unsuitable for most of us.

I can postulate several reasons for the decline in the number of age-related discrimination complaints reported in recent years. As long as there are no specific anti-discrimination laws in place, older workers affected by forced lay-offs will consider making official complaints a waste of time.

The SG govt has long acknowledged that ageism is a problem in S'pore. However, it has maintained that introducing anti-discriminatory laws could increase business costs and undermine our economic competitiveness. Such an assertion does not appear to be accurate since the global competitiveness of nations with anti-discrimination laws, such as the United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, Finland and Sweden, remains relatively stable.

in sg you must be debt-free, self-employed, and cash flow positive and or finanicially independent by age 45. otherwise you’re debt-burdened with all the 3-letter acronyms, unemployable, constantly cash-flow negative, and a heavy liability for your family and society. unless your parents are very wealthy and you’re the sole inheritor, sinkies ignore future and financial planning and the perils of career-menopause at an accelerated pace. just hope the many highrises don’t turn into platforms for (once in a lifetime) diving performance and problem-alleviation.

shouldn't you be financially independent by 50? Work is no longer relevant, enjoying life and sipping wine is.

PMETs like me are in the minority. I have enough set aside in savings and investments to have retired by 50. The vast majority will have to work till they drop dead in the most expensive city in the world.

Most PMETs are laid off in their mid-40s to early 50s without enough savings or investments so they may stop full-time work. They will probably still have children of school going age.
