'I wanted to murder her'

IN MITIGATION, Koh said he was 'dumbfounded' by his own act, which he described as 'inexplicable.'
'I had, in fact, wanted to commit a murder. I was near to killing her,' he added.

TWO years ago, Koh Kim Swee, now 23, hit his mother on the head with a hammer and was jailed 15 months. The unrepentant son hurt her again two months ago. He slashed his 49-year-old mother's forehead with a 19cm-long knife along the common corridor outside their flat at Jurong East Street 21 on March 18 - over a trivial matter. On Thursday, he was jailed 30 months and ordered to be caned six strokes after he admitted to the charge earlier this week.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Prem Raj told Community Court Judge May Mesenas that Koh confronted his mother who was then mopping the floor of the living room and demanded why she had washed his cup. When she denied this, he scolded her repeatedly and insisted that she had washed his cup when he had ordered her not to. Koh became increasingly agitated and aggressive and started to shout at his mother. Madam Lee then decided to leave for her own safety as she knew from past encounters that he would do something to harm her.

Just as she was stepping out of the corridor, Koh, who was wielding a knife in his right hand, slashed her on the left side of her head. When he tried to slash her again, she managed to stop him by holding on to the blade of the knife, injuring her left hand and arm. Her screams alerted her neighbours. Madam Lee ran to the lift lobby and sought the help of her neighbours on the first floor. She was treated in hospital for cuts and her head and left arm.

SINGAPORE : A man has been sentenced to 30 months' jail and six strokes of the cane for slashing his mother with a knife. 23-year-old Koh Kim Swee used the weapon to hurt 49-year-old Lee Yoke Kuen near their flat at Block 287B Jurong East Street 21 two months ago.

The court heard that on March 18 at about 10am, Koh got agitated with his mom for supposedly washing his cup and shouted at her. Madam Lee then decided to leave the flat for her own safety. As she stepped out into the common corridor, Koh slashed her forehead with the knife.

He then tried to slash her again, but this time, Madam Lee managed to stop him by holding on to the blade of the knife. Koh returned to their flat after she knelt down to beg her son for mercy. Madam Lee then ran to a lift, went down to the ground floor and sought the help of two neighbours - 18-year-old Nurul'ain Talib and 44-year-old Talib Abdul Rahman.

Madam Lee told them about the incident and was sent to the National University Hospital for treatment. Koh meanwhile gathered his belongings and left the flat. But he returned early the next morning to retrieve his passport and identity card - only to find the front door latched from the inside.

He was resting at a nearby park when police officers surrounded him and placed him under arrest. A report from the Institute of Mental Health stated that Koh is suffering from Anti-Social Personality Disorder. The report also said when asked whether he felt any remorse for attacking his mother, he replied that he felt "numb" and had "no feelings".

In court, Koh told District Judge May Mesenas that he is "fully prepared" to see a specialist to address his condition. The judge told him to work with his counsellor and psychiatrist to help him deal with anger management. Koh could have been sentenced to a maximum of seven years' jail, caned or fined.
