SINGAPORE: Singapore swimmer Yip Pin Xiu has won a silver medal — the country’s first at the Paralympics — in the women’s 50—metre freestyle in Beijing.

She came in at 57.43 seconds.

Despite not coming in first in the finals, she maintains the new world and paralympic record she set in the heats earlier Saturday, with a timing of 57.04 seconds.

Mexico’s Patricia Valle, who won the gold, managed a close 57.05 seconds in the finals.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was present to cheer Yip on and presented flowers for her event.

As a show of gratitude, Yip presented the medal to her coach Ang Peng Siong.

"Happy, because it is the first silver for the Paralympics, for the swimming," Yip told Channel NewsAsia when asked how she felt about her win.

Singapore already has two bronze medals in the Paralympics. They were won by riding ace Laurentia Tan in the equestrian events.

the prize money is also so little,compare to what the table tennis team got when they won the silver in the just concluded Beijing Olympic.
these athletes train even harder and much longer than those normal athlete.
they should get at least more than a normal athlete.

Probably so, since they are not a product of SG Inc and has not been invested in millions for the past few years to be groomed and promoted by SG Inc as compare to those FT Trash.

It is very obvious that the para-olympians are sadly sidelined as compare to the normal events. You will notice that the media would report the achievements but the coverage is still not as mega compare to BJ2008 Games. One country two standards.

Handicapped Singaporeans winning Bronze and Silver at Paralympics so quiet. Damned unappreciative Singaporeans. PRCs win ping pong like all hell break loose! Lost money still so euphoric! Laurentia and Yip won - so subdued and so painfully quiet. What sort of society is this?

Thanks for bringing this up.

It takes far more effort for Paralympians. We should be more spurred by these tremendous personalities than by anyone else. Despite their setbacks, personal and social handicaps, they really do make me feel inadequate. In our hearts, they deserve more than gold.

Actually this isn't the first time our paraolympians have won medals.

The real reason for the lukewarm news is the sinkee attitude towards the disabled. We are a very ruthless society, and anyone with a disability is looked on as a liability. No matter what they do, sinkees will always think theirs are 'second-class victories'. They'll say "Chey, the disabled swimmers cannot beat Michael Phelps la. They can only take part in these games that let bai-ka, bai-chiu people play."

From the start, there is almost no support for the para-Olympians, and yet they can get medals. Shame on this stinking island for not celebrating their victories. This should be front page news and they should get features all over the press.
