Mainstream media has begun their “cleaning up” campaign after Punggol East MP Michael Palmer announced his resignation on Wed (12 Dec) over his extramarital affair with a female PA staff.
In an article (‘Punggol East back in the spotlight‘) on mainstream newspaper TODAY (15 Dec, Sat), it polled 30 Punggol East residents to give the impression that most of them are not too keen to having a by-election, now that the Punggol East SMC seat has been vacated:
“But for many of the residents, the thought of going to the polls again has not sunk in yet. They are still reeling in shock over the loss of an MP who was clearly popular among the residents.
Among the 30 residents TODAY spoke to, 13 felt that a by-election should be called within three months. Slightly more than half (16) felt that there was no rush, and one said there was no need to elect a new MP for the constituency.”
What sort of residents did TODAY talk to? Are they grassroots members?
TODAY quoted a resident, Ms Sri Priya, saying, “He is a good person, and has done much to improve the estate.”
It even quoted a Mr Wang who said that he has no qualms voting for Mr Palmer again, “I am very regretful that there is one less talent, everyone here has only goodwill towards him. And now, my only concern is we don’t have him anymore. If he ever stands as an MP again, I would vote for him again.”
With Palmer’s resignation, DPM Teo has earlier announced that MP Teo Ser Luck will take over to look after Punggol East.
TODAY wrote that this arrangement was “welcomed by some of the residents”, implying that perhaps a by-election is not necessary since Punggol East residents can be well taken care by Teo Ser Luck.
Indeed, it quoted “Peter” who said that the time frame for a by-election is not important – what matters is that the estate is “properly maintained”. Hence, the person is saying that if Teo Ser Luck can look after Punggol East estate well, there is no need for a by-election.
And to further help in the damage control, TODAY wrote that more than half of the residents polled felt that Mr Palmer shouldn’t have resigned. In other words, it’s ok for politicians to commit adultery!
TODAY wrote:
“Among the 30 residents TODAY spoke to, 16 felt that it was not necessary for Mr Palmer to have quit as the affair was a “personal matter”. Ten said it was necessary, while four were ambivalent as to whether he could have stayed on.”
In last year’s GE, 31,158 residents voted in Punggol East. The PAP’s Michael Palmer won 54.5% of the votes. WP’s Lee Li Lian garnered 41%, while SDA’s Desmond Lim received 4.5% of the votes.

Punggol East is NOT Hougang.

To prove that MSM is lying, spend some money, put flyers in letter box or go online, setup an official poll and the truth of the residents' sentiments will surface.

There is always a hurry in everything we do. That's life.

If pau chiak, sure hurry hurry call for BE. A person will choose to delay his course of action if unsure of outcome. In this case, the latter applies.

Looks like TODAY is turning into another trash tabloid paper like TNP which nobody reads nor respects anymore.

Save for the fact that its free, otherwise nobody bothers to pick it up. I've seen stacks of TODAY left on the counters with customers not even bohering to give it a glance.

The need for a BE has very little to do with Punggol South. The issue is national and not at a constituency level. Citizens regardless of their constituency are to be represented in parliament via a secret vote in either a GE or a BE.

What they are saying is that they had one MP too many in Parliament. See, one less MP, no worry.
MIWs suffering from siege mentality - they know it, just trying not to show it.
Getting a candidate which meets their now suspect 'high' standard vetting system will be problem.
Wiht half the army joining SMRT, you can be sure that whichever military guy will be less than half-baked.
If the likes of ex-COA and Tan Chuan-Jin were considered the cream for the last GE, what can you expect.
Army 'scholars' are flops. Period. Look at the likes of No Porn Lui, Desperate Desmond, and the North Korean dictator-lookalike in NOL.

bwahahahahahahaa... send in OYK lah! mai tu liao!:biggrin::biggrin:
Ong not so brave lah. He can only hide in GRC. Last round he though bao chiak, got Georgie boy and lim hwee hua, but end up sunk with entire aircraft carrier.

My guess is that pap now asking George to run, but doubt he will want to. Now PAP's surrogate GMS looking around for his next TKL to spoil the party for WP. CSJ seems eager to jump in.

If he lost, that would be the end of him. Does the PAP often take such risk?

If he is the candidate and he loses, don't be too surprised if they put him in a grc in 2016.

That's how thick-skinned they have become.

But this time it sure will back fired upon them come 2016 especially in Punggol, if they don't hold a erection.

It's not that as if Mickey Mouse Palmer died and the seat was vacated so that holding it off could at least buy them some time.

This time the residents want some form of justice.

Of course, as dirty as they come they'll merge this 'sure lose seat' with some other to be GRC that they had a larger margin before.

This female Pundek could be part of the growing number of new shitizens from India residing in Punggol..

She should just shut up and finish up her thosai..

Infantile behaviour despite being in power for so long! The writing is on the wall! Times have changed when public opinion can be manipulated so easily by state-controlled media. Today is spinning yarn.
