OP's point is not who is not more distanced but that one cannot truly call himself independent if he has been associated with a party for 30 years -- longer than either candidates. TKL spent about half of his life with PAP.

At the very least, a President ought to be eloquent. Toastmasters and British Council anyone?

Lesser of two evils I agree but what variables are you taking into account in arriving at your decision? e.g level of perceived independence, financial savvy, 'track record'. list them out and lets rationalise this together.
