cannot. train size and number of cabins or cars are very specific to each line and its station design and build. for example, ew/ns lines have stations with platforms that accomodate up to a certain number of cars or cabin (the upper limit). each cabin door has to align with the corresponding platform door. plus the trains in the circle line can’t mix and match with trains in the ew/ns lines. notice the platforms in the circle line is shorter than platforms in the ew/ns lines. the downtown line is also different. each line’s platform and train have their max length and number of cars plus own signaling system and voltage level. cannot suka suka add, extend or swap cars beyond length limit. reducing the number of cars in a train is a possibility during non-peak hours. just align train to center of platform when stopping. platform doors with no corresponding cars can remain close.I'm not sure if the trains can handle this but:
1) extend the EW/NS lines by 1 train cabin (16% increase) during peak. Just need to align the back doors of the first train to the current 1st door on the platform. I think (think only ah, I have not measured and don't know the exact measurements between doors) the rest of the doors will align and the last cabin will have its front door aligned only. reserve the 2 cabins for "Women only" or "seniors" or something like that. so the demand is specific and channeled away from the rest of the train
2) worse case scenario, extend the front and back of each platform by a bit more to allow for all the doors. if you look the end of the platforms, they all have that "extra" space that can be used for this. The Govt like to spend our money, might as well use it for everybody's sake rather than cycling lanes
