I cannot see the significance of kra canal or land bridge economically. Thailand would have built it decades ago if it was viable. But right now they dont even have a major port at both east and west coast of kra canal.
Malaysia has a big port in kuantan hoping to attract container liner service but it failed. It was revived mainly due to iron ore and bauxite exports.

Primarily due to lower costs, reduced environmental impact, and fewer domestic political controversies related to security and geopolitical balance, Thailand did not proceed earlier because of a lack of budget and insufficient investment, both locally and internationally. Now that China has invested in and gained experience with such mega constructions, they also possess the necessary manpower and materials.

Thailand extends an invitation to China and other nations to invest in the Kra Land Bridge(inside Thailand), with Chinese companies expressing strong interest in actively bidding for the project's construction with minimum two ports, one in the east the other in the west. The Andaman Sea is not involved, except for the ocean liner, which will be traveling through international waters.

[SINGAPORE] Chinese carrier Sea Legend Line made maritime history in October, becoming the first to offer a liner-type shipping service with multiple stops from Asia to Europe through the Arctic.

The voyage through the Northern Sea Route (NSR) in the Arctic by the fully loaded container ship Istanbul Bridge took only 20 days from Ningbo-Zhoushan in China to Felixstowe in the United Kingdom, with subsequent port calls at Hamburg in Germany, Gdansk in Poland and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Sea Legend Line named the service the China-Europe Arctic Express. It reportedly plans to establish regular summer voyages along the Arctic route by 2026.

Beijing has moved to seal Hainan’s customs borders and turn the island into a full-fledged free trade port (FTP), a move that has sharply divided Chinese and overseas analysts over its economic and geopolitical implications.

Under the new framework, the Hainan FTP will implement arrangements for zero tariffs as part of island-wide special customs operations. Manufacturers operating in Hainan will be able to import raw materials tariff-free. At the same time, products that meet a 30% local value-added threshold will be allowed to enter the Chinese mainland without tariffs.


The scheme, which kicked off on December 18, also expands Hainan’s role as a duty-free shopping hub. Luxury goods will be sold tax-free to any Hainan or foreign consumer who can show a record of overseas travel within the previous 12 months, subject to an annual spending cap of 100,000 yuan (about US$14,000) per person. That will extend policies that in the past applied mainly to travelers leaving Hainan for the Chinese mainland.

At the heart of the scheme is a three-part model officials describe as “opening the front line, controlling the second line, and allowing free flow within the island.”

  • The second line marks the customs boundary with the Chinese mainland, where goods flows are closely monitored to prevent disruption to mainland markets.
  • Free flow within the island refers mainly to the movement of people.
Officials say the construction of the Hainan FTP follows a clear, phased roadmap:

  • By 2025: establish a basic policy and institutional framework centered on trade liberalization and investment facilitation.
  • By 2035: further mature the free trade port’s institutional system and operational model.
  • By mid-century: fully develop Hainan into a high-standard free trade port with strong international influence.
 
Singapore experienced a significant decline in regional transshipment volumes following the customs closure of the Hainan Free Trade Port. Transshipment activity along the Southeast Asian corridor, particularly between Indonesia and China, dropped by 23% since opening in late 2025. Overall, Singapore's transshipment trade volume with China recorded an 11.3% year-on-year decrease, marking its steepest decline in a decade. Additionally, Singapore's total transshipment volume fell by 3%—the first drop in 20 years—coinciding with the growing operational maturity of Yangpu.
