once i was queuing at to buy curry puff at old chang kee, in front of me is a malay fellow wanting to order some stuff in english. The chee bye PRC behind the counter cannot understand a shit, then scolded the malay fellow
"This is Singapore, most of us are Chinese, you should speak in Mandarin" (in a heavily accented northern China style English)
In my heart lim na bey chee bye, this is my fellow brother in arms that served 2 and half year NS with me.
so when its my turn....without skipping a beat...
"2 curry puff and 1 chicken cube put cheese, take away"
The PRC mei mei cannot understand a shit, the malay mat look stunt at what am I doing.
PRC mei mei: can order in English
Me: This is Singapore, the working language here is English, why must I order in Mandarin?
the other staff took over the order and packed for me, and instructed her to handle the customer behind me. the mat yoyo saluted me for standing for him.
here come the best part, the fellow behind me also purposely ordered in English also. I broke character and LAUGHED. The mat yoyo as well. Everyone in the queue understands that we are now standing behind a fellow Singaporean that was being bullied, everyone understands the mission.
And it happened again on the 4th person. The PRC mei mei run back to the kitchen behind and seems like crying. the mat yoyo laughed and saluted all of us, everyone just waved and winked back.

It has been a longstanding bugbear of mine that the service industry is full of Ah Tiongs who think that just because you look Chinese, they can serve you speaking Mandarin without switching to speaking English.

can distinguish a tiong from sinkie at the food counter if back is facing you.
sinkie: 打包
tiong: 带走
hongkangers used to say the former but now say the latter as the former seems to suggest taking away a dead body in a body bag.

炮 is too violent. can sexplode.打包 sounds like 打炮, which is Tiong slang for piak piak sexy time.
