One cannot legally "disown" a child. At best, omit out of the will.

It is sad and shocking that a father would do that his own flesh and blood, more so in close knit Chinese families taught and practiced since Confucian times.......but at least he did not follow the horrific ANCIENT Roman style - to kill one's own son who is a proven failure to the family and society....and upheld by every Roman born back then that no judicial system can interfere....which sadly still is practiced today by some insane and regressive supposed religion that supports so called 'honor killing'.
There is not much information on what caused the rift between a father and his own flesh and blood, that the father had spent his life in providing and grooming the child, but somehow, something went wrong in the family, and left much to speculations... However there are clues...
1. They have Chinese names, and publication on newspapers ARE STILL read by many of the older folks - the father's peers. Perhaps the father wanted his PEERS, whom will KNOW his name and lineage, that he had disown his son, and be aware of such fact so that should the son approach his PEERS for anything based upon his lineage to his father, example - for loans, for help, for investments, etc - to AVOID that son?
Such happens mostly to those whom are of upper middle class families whereby the father are self made successful entrepreneurs, SMEs or Corporations, had groom their next generations but such were found undesirable or unable to measure up to expectations.....
While the older generations will still read newspapers, but there will be some whom will post such articles in social media, so that the younger generation may read and perhaps learn from such lessons, not just to condemn or praise, but realize mistakes made by others, so as to avoid such situations in their own lives...
2. Or it may had been a criminal case that the son had hurt the traditional LINEAGE name of the father and ancestors who by tradition, leaves his lineage upon an ancestral clan table in clan holdings....and thus, to take that wayward son's name away from the ancestral table...so that all in the clan may know, made further known by public publication on newspapers.
3. Or it may had been a simple case of neglect by the son, whom did not take care of his father as Confucian principles dictate. However, most fathers would not take such a public course of action....
Ultimately, blood is thicker than water, and may both father and son reconcile, or seek steps for reconciliation thru family, relatives, friends or govt democratic institutions and agencies. No mortal is perfect. WE - you and I, will make mistakes, and it is only thru mistakes made that we all will learn to progress and evolve, with the 1st step to ACKNOWLEDGE mistakes oneself made, to correct such, than to blame everyone else and anything under the sun for such mistakes or find illogical JUSTIFICATIONS for one's mistake made.
The Family is the BUILDING BLOCK OF CIVILIZATION...without such, there can be no Humankind....
