A food delivery rider has been sentenced to six weeks' jail for hitting an 80-year-old man with his personal mobility aid (PMA), as well as physically assaulting him.
Shin Min Daily News reported that on Aug. 18, Mohamad Supri (transliterated), 52, pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing hurt.
Another charge of committing a rash act causing hurt was taken into consideration during sentencing.
First punch
According to Shin Min, court documents showed that the incident took place on Feb. 10 at 10pm.
The elderly man was walking on a footpath near Block 236 Bukit Batok East Avenue 5.
The accused's PMA hit him, causing him to suffer injuries to his right thigh and hip.
The victim got angry when the accused rode off without stopping.
He cursed loudly at the accused while walking to a nearby bench to sit down to ease the pain.
When the accused heard this, he dismounted from his PMA before walking over and punching the elderly man in the face, knocking him to the ground.
Second punch
When the man tried to get up and call for help, the accused punched him a second time, this time in the chest, causing the elderly man to fall a second time.
He then rode off.
A 21-year-old woman who witnessed the assault rushed to help the victim and called the police who tracked the assailant down later that night.
The elderly man was taken to the hospital and discharged on the same day with no visible injuries.
During his plea for leniency, Supri claimed to have been suffering from a slipped disc and said he was scheduled for a third surgery, adding that he found it difficult to walk and could not "sleep in a prison".
