Whistleblower protection laws exist to ensure that those who report wrongdoing, in good faith, do not suffer retaliation by their employer or organisation. Any organisation will almost certainly deny every allegation of impropriety. Since companies usually have more funds than employees or members, they will resort to threats and legal action to outlast a whistleblower - hoping that the accuser’s money and resolve will run dry.

While the govt asserts that POFMA is a necessary to fight misinformation, most of us view the power to issue correction directives to counter online falsehoods, stifles free expression and dissent. The govt, however, defends POFMA by stating its purpose is to address false statements of fact. This has led to ongoing debate about the law's effectiveness and its implications for freedom of expression.

The reason why whistleblowers may be discouraged from reporting wrongdoing could lie with S'pore’s defamation law. While it tries to prevent the innocent from slander, this law may also inadvertently protect the wealthy and influential from prosecution.
