There is no need to work so hard if food is all around you. No need to do agriculture even. Can eat tapioca. Rice cultivation came much later.
You forgot, philippines get crippled by super typhoons every decade or so and super volcano eruptions like pinatubo on top of the regular earthquakes. If you had planted palm oil, which has a life cycle of 25 years, it will be destoryed before its full cycle is complete.
Plus most land are owned by descendants of spanish conquistadors.
