In order to even contemplate getting a license, one must not have any secret society connections. This means tha the applicant must not have any criminal records linked to any gang related activities. The reason is the authorities don't want the triads to gain a foothold in prostitution.

Secondly, it is highly recommended to engage a lawyer, as he will have to go thru quite a substantial amount of agreements and statutory declarations on behalf of the applicant. Lawyers for brothel owners are highly paid and they also have nice juicy fringe benefits.

Thirdly, a bond of $50,000 is needed to be placed with authorites. In the event that the brothel hires illegal prostitutes, or breaches any rules with regards to solicitations or advertising*, it will be forfeited.

Most brothels in Geylang are operated from private houses. A large majority of these are rented. The brothel owners pay a monthly rent to the house owner, and he has to settle the electricity and water bills. That's the reason why most brothels operate long hours (1:30pm - 1:00am, 7 days a week). Typical rentals range from $7,000-$13,000 depending on the configuration.

Once a new owner has acquired his license and a joint fromwhich to operate (the Operating System and the hardware) , he needs the girls (Software). How they get these is quite interesting. Thai girls are usually recruited from rural areas in Thailand, and some of them are even from tribal communities (especially the really tall ones). There is a sourcing agent in Thailand, and brothel owners in Singapore take a trip up to Bangkok to meet him. He will then show them photos of potential "stock" and the brothel owners take their pick. On average, a girl costs about S$5,000-7,000, inclusive of agent fee, airfare, etc.

Once decided, the agent will have a runner come back to Singapore to prepare work permits and necessary items. The brothel owners then bring their own "stock" back to Singapore and back to their brothels. The girls usually have a one week orientation period, before they are put to work. They will have to go for medical checkups, get their work permits, and familiarise themselves with Geylang on the whole. Thai girls work here on a 2 year contract, and they have an option to renewed it when expired.

The basic price of a 15 min session, or one shot, is S$40 and 30 mins is S$80. However, for S$120, it is an hour. Overnight sessions are S$130 and begins usually at 12:30am on weekdays and 1:00am on weekends. It lasts until 10am the following day.

The process of prostitution in Singapore is quite organised, and gang elements are unable to penetrate into it.

Here are some interesting trivia about Thai prostitute brothels in Geylang: - Brothel owners have an unwritten rule that they do not screw their own stock as this almost guarantees the failure of their business. However when the girl leaves or transfers to another brothel, they can go ahead. Most brothels have an altar facing the front door but some have "ghost children" as guardians. These are usually souls of unborn babies or fetuses. These are usually very powerful in the Chinese spirit world, and are very protective of their owners. A sign of a "ghost child" altar is where there are toys or children's clothes placed at the altar. - A veteran of Geylang will know better than to take a treat from a friend at a brothel. It is not considered wise to treat a friend to a fuck session, or to accept one. This can lead to a curse on one's life. - While it is a rare chance that love will blossom in a brothel, when it does occur, a person can buy out a prostitute by paying the brothel owner the cost of the girl, plus a calculated loss in earnings. On average this works out to a total of S$15,000-20,000.
