Work-life balance suffers due to technology: Survey

SINGAPORE - The majority of employees in Singapore struggle to achieve work-life balance, due to the widespread use of technology.

According to a study by global recruitment & HR services provider, Randstad, more workers feel obliged to answer emails and calls outside of work hours, as they are connected through smartphones and the Internet.

The Randstad Workmonitor Report for Q1 2012, released today, polled 405 employees in Singapore.

It found that seven in 10, or 71 per cent, receive calls or emails outside regular office hours.

Sixty-seven per cent receive work-related calls or emails when they are on annual leave.

Nearly half, or 45 per cent, said their employers expect them to be available at all times, or '24/7'.

The number is higher for those who are between 45 and 54 years old and for those aged 25 to 34 years.

Sixty per cent of workers feel they fall short of their own expectation if they do not respond to an email or phone call immediately.

Randstad regional director, Singapore & Malaysia, Ms Karin Clarke, said companies and staff need to be mindful of the knock-on effect from technology.

"Business leaders should be clear in their expectations for how 'switched on' they expect their staff to be.

"For example, for people in a client-facing role, there may be a need to respond instantly around the clock but for others, replying on Monday morning is soon enough.

"At the same time, employees should set their own boundaries and ensure they spend uninterrupted time with friends and family and allow themselves the chance to relax." CHANNEL NEWSASIA

How to remain sane while working like dogs and get min wages in a populated and noisy place like big cities?

That is the real question everybody should ask!

Is there time and quietness to find yourself?

In Singapore, the government values cheaper, better, faster(tm) obedient workers. Work-life balance is just empty talk.

No one should be obliged to answer emails and calls outside work hours*, especially during vacation and reservist. There should be a zero tolerance policy towards employers letting work encroach your life. If you respond just ONE work-related email or phonecall, they will take it for granted that you will respond to any number of work-related emails or phonecalls, then take offence that you fail to respond to some of them.

If you want me to check/respond to work email at home, pay me for telecommuting. If you want me to work OT, pay me extra. Last time I checked, I am no longer in school. I don't bring back homework to do at home.

I am peeved at wage slaves bending over backwards to appease unreasonable employers.

*If you're your own boss and dealing with clients, suppliers on a frequent basis, then maybe an exception can be made. Still, everyone should have been informed about your period of absence from work and at least have the courtesy to not bother you.

Singapore has the highest number of no life workers. When i was doing my ICT in Wallaby, 50% of my bunk mates has to constantly handle their work via email. One guy was telling me, if he does not clear his email, the mailbox will explode within a few days :D

A PRC lady allegedly tried to ‘kidnap’ a Singaporean boy from his mother at Ang Mo Kio hub on Sunday!

According to a netizen ‘Allison Goon’, she was watching a magic show at Ang Mo Kio Hub and her son went missing when she was throwing rubbish. She turned around and saw a lady holding her son’s hand and after she went up to stop them, the lady claimed she held the wrong child.

Allison then spotted her walking away with another man as if nothing has happened.

In an interview with the media, the manager of Ang Mo Kio Hub confirmed the incident and said she had advised the mother to lodge a police report which she did. She also inform her that the lady who ‘abducted’ her child speaks with a ‘heavy PRC accent’.

Meanwhile, Ang Mo GRC MP Seng Han Thong made a surprise appearance at Ang Mo Kio Hub yesterday together with his team of grassroots activists to ‘recce’ the place.

I dont think so. If a person really responsible he/she will answer the call without feeling.
The person who call the person on leave there must be something very important or that person who call are really stupid.
