Kapitan Goh Meng Seng: NSP likely to field Nicole Seah in Hougang by-election

Source : temasektimes on March 17, 2012

http://temasektimes.wordpress.com/

Though he does not have any official position in the National Solidarity Party (NSP), Goh Meng Seng still talks and behaves as if he is its Secretary-General.

After ranting at the Workers Party continuously for the past four weeks, Mr Goh now dropped a bombshell: Nicole Seah is likely to be fielded in the Hougang by-election if NSP decides to contest in it.

The Hougang seat was left vacant after its ex-WP MP Yaw Shin Leong was sacked from the Workers Party a month ago over his failure to address swirling rumors of his alleged extra-marital affairs with multiple married women, including a neighbor from China.

All the opposition parties have indicated that they would not vie with the Workers Party to contest in the Hougang by-election with the exception of NSP.

In an article written in Chinese posted on his blog yesterday, Mr Goh wrote that NSP is ‘likely’ to contest in Hougang to test its ‘strength’ and the price to pay for will be not ‘too high’ even if its candidate loses the election deposit like what happened to Singapore Democratic Alliance Desmond Lim when he contested in Punggol East in the last General Election against the PAP and WP.

(“国民团结党可能会以这次补选做为往后选战的前哨战,以试探彼此的实力。尤其是在这单选区的补选就算失去按金,代价也不会太大。”)

Mr Goh then revealed NSP’s plans to send Nicole Seah to contest in Hougang:

“If the NSP really contest in Hougang, it is likely to send Nicole Seah whose popularity is likely to cause a lot of damage to Workers Party’s Png Eng Huat.”

There are speculations that the Workers Party may field its veteran politician Png Eng Huat in Hougang as he has been appointed to chair the Hougang Constituency Committee recently.

(如果国民团结党真的打算到后港打三角战的话,它很有可能会派佘雪玲上阵。高知名度的佘雪玲将对工人党的方荣发造成最大的冲击。)

He added:
“If the Workers Party really loses Hougang as a result of Nicole Seah’s challenge, that is because karma is ripening.”

(如果工人党真的是因为佘雪玲的挑战而失去后港的话,那将是因果报应的终极体现了。)

This is another thread I started in the Politics Section.
http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread.php?112445-Hougang-BE-the-quot-open-ended-quot-faux-pas

Do note that it has little to do with GMS, but the responses of NSP Hazel, and TJS, on the Hougang BE.

==========

There's a saying "turn the other cheek" for a reason - when one is being "slapped" so to speak and returns that, both parties are in the same moral position and this factor will be eradicated as a determinant on higher moral ground, shifting to other factors.

By announcing that they will keep their cards open on the Hougang by-election, the NSP and TJS (and his new party if so) is explicitly though indirectly stating that avoiding 3-corner fights is not inherently within their principles or values. Even if they do not do so in the end (ie enter the Hougang BE), this may open them to negotiating problems later in 2016, as they lose the moral authority to ask WP or other parties (eg. SDP, SPP) to allow them a straight fight on this basis.

On top of that, if Hougang which was a WP held ward can be open-ended, more so for wards under the PAP even if they had been the last contesting opposition. I believe that could be why SDP was eager to declare that they would not enter the Hougang BE. Desmond Lim also keeps his moral ground on the basis that it was WP, not him, who was the 3rd party. As for the NSP and TJS, this "open-ended" faux pas may well spell an end to future requests that 3-corners fights be averted.

He is a political observer now. We should just take it at face value of an observer and nothing more. Not representative of current NSP leaders political statement.

You may not agree, but there is a difference between a political observer like Eugene Tan and a political observer who was NSP chief commenting on NSP affairs. The way people will take the responses will be different. Apparently, Nicole is getting some flak on her FB for that.

Agreed. He should be more discerning about his impact when commenting on NSP.

I can bet you my bottom dollar that Nicole Seah will not stand there. I am sure Ramseth will agree with me.

To be fair, WP also doesn't believe in negotiating to avoid 3-cornered contests, as seen in Punggol East 2011. Neither does NSP, since Marine Parade 1992. The trouble with GMS whenever things don't go his way, he'll curse people with karma. Yet he can't see for himself, his karma curses keep bouncing back on him.

Neither does NSP, since Marine Parade 1992.

They would argue that it is an old leadership in old times. You didn't hear Tan Chee Kien argue that WP (under JBJ) was running into problems and NSP filed nominations in their place, only to see the three-seat SDP including Chiam come at the final minute and filed in despite whatever circumstances. As for SJP, it was a party none of the other parties took seriously.
