About 1,200 Singaporeans renounce citizenship annually in last 5 years

SINGAPORE: An average of 1,200 Singaporeans renounced their citizenship every year between 2007 and 2011.

Of these, 300 were naturalised citizens.

But the renunciation rates for both naturalised citizens and Singapore born citizens were low at 0.1 per cent or less.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean gave this update in Parliament.

Mr Teo also explained why some give up their citizenship and assured members that every application for citizenship was carefully evaluated.

Mr Teo said: "Every application for permanent residence or Singapore citizenship is evaluated holistically on a range of criteria, including economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, and length of stay in Singapore. The reasons for emigration vary. Some emigrants leave for family reasons, because of marriage or to reunite the family members overseas, while others do so for a different living environment.

"All Singapore citizens and permanent residents who own HDB flats will have to sell their properties if they renounce their citizenship or cease to be permanent residents. There are no exceptions to this rule."

I have a friend who renounced her citizenship as her parents wanted to migrate when she was still in her teens.

Now she is back and wants to get PR but application was rejected repeatedly.

Sometimes the guy has to renounce his citizenship because he has a citizenship of another country. Singapore do not recognize dual citizenship. USA, UK, many European countries and Australia recognize dual citizen. The people who can leave Singapore are often the ones who can contribute to a country. Given the competition, Singapore should just recognize dual citizenship.

1,200 Singaporeans give up their citizenship yearly: DPM

About 1,200 Singaporeans give up their citizenship yearly, said DPM Teo.

Around 900 Singapore born citizens and 300 naturalised citizens give up their citizenship yearly, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Teo said that renunciation rates for both citizens born in Singapore and foreigners who take up citizenship were "low" at 0.1 per cent or less, reported Channel NewsAsia (CNA)

According to CNA, the given renunciation rates were for the years between 2007 and 2011.

Teo also offered reasons as to why people chose to give up their citizenship. "The reasons for emigration vary. Some emigrants leave for family reasons, because of marriage or to reunite the family members overseas, while others do so for a different living environment," CNA reported him as saying.

He added that every application for permanent residence or Singapore citizenship is "evaluated holistically" on a range of criteria, which includes economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, and length of stay in Singapore, according to CNA.

Teo also reiterated that it is compulsory for all Singapore citizens and permanent residents who own HDB flats to sell them if they renounce their citizenship, reported CNA.

Not true. The 1st world is also experiencing the greying of their population. They are looking for young, hard working people to contribute to the economy. When I was in Canada I met many blue collar workers who were new citizens.
