[h=2]NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu seeks help from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore pleading for second chance to ‘repay’ Singapore[/h]Posted by temasektimes on February 26, 2012
Embattled NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu (孙旭) has sought help from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore on Thursday during its weekly reception for PRC students in Singapore, Lianhe Zaobao reported today.
Sun Xu reportedly approached the Chinese Embassy’s Secretary of Education Mr Sun Zhi Ping (孙治平) for help, expressing his regrets over his ‘inappropriate’ remarks. He told the embassy official that he has already removed the offensive comment and apologized to Singaporeans.
He also pleaded for a second chance to ‘start afresh’ and to ‘repay’ Singapore for ‘nurturing’ him all these years.
A final year student in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Sun sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans with his offensive remarks on there “being more dogs than humans in Singapore” on his microblog ‘Weibo’ last Saturday. Currently on attachment with German oilfield service company Schlumberger, Sun Xu is expected to graduate in two months’ time.
In response to queries from the media, another official from the Chinese Embassy Madam Zhou Jian Ping (周建平) said she was disappointed with Sun Xu and had asked him to apologize to Singaporeans, NUS, his teachers and friends and everybody.
“The Chinese Embassy will not submit any request to NUS. We believe the university will handle the matter in a just and fair manner,” she added.
(“大使馆不会向大学校方提出任何要求,我们相信校方会给予公正和公平的处理。”)
Madam Zhou’s stern rebuke to Sun Xu is in stark contrast to PAP MP Baey Yam Keng who initially tried to exonerate Sun from blame by saying that he might not mean what he say and then asked Singaporeans to reflect on their own behavior instead.
Sun Xu will attend a disciplinary hearing convened by NUS on 13 March where his fate will be decided.

Ya lah, the Ass Loon's style of fake apology. If he gets away with it, expect more and more of such FTrash freeloaders without NS obligation but given free education with living expenses thrown in to take it for granted and insult Sporeans like nobody's biz. Time to kill one to warn the hundreds!

[h=2]Majority of Singaporeans want NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu’s MOE scholarship to be revoked[/h]Posted by temasektimes on February 25, 2012
An overwhelming majority of Singaporeans want the Ministry of Education (MOE) to revoke the scholarship of NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu, who sparked nationwide outrage with his now infamous remark on there ‘being more dogs than humans in Singapore.’
In an online poll done on the Temasek Times, 96.7 percent out of more than 2,000 netizens polled wants MOE to revoke his scholarship. A Facebook page was also set up calling NUS to do so.
A final year student in Mechanical Engineering at NUS, Sun also used the term “瘪三” to describe Singapore uncles in the same thread, which is a derogatory word typically used in Shanghai to describe the underclass bums in the society. It means a person who is a tramp, bum, beggar, drifter, loafer, outcast, vagrant, destitute and worthless person.
When told by a fellow netizen not to be too fussy, he replied:
“Bunch of 挫逼. My temper these days is already a lot better.”
挫逼” is a derogatory word commonly used in mainland China for cursing people, an equivalent of the Hokkien phrase ‘CCB’ used as a vulgarity in Singapore.
Sun Xu is also currently under police investigation for ‘intentional harassment’ after a Singaporean lodged a police report against him for an alleged threat he posted on his microblog.
Despite the public outcry, MOE would only say it was ‘disappointed’ with the ‘irresponsible’ blog comments made by Sun Xu, adding that its scholarship administrators will “take reference from findings of disciplinary proceedings by the National University of Singapore (NUS), where Mr Sun is studying, before recommending what action to take,” leading some to suspect that the case will be ‘pending’ till Sun Xu graduates and jets off to find work elsewhere.
MOE’s tepid response is in stark contrast to a recent case involving two male Singaporean students who were expelled immediately from their Junior College after being caught on video kissing publicly in school.
Speaking to queries from the media, NUS Provost Professor Tan Eng Chye said he has met with Sun Xu and ‘counselled’ him. He admitted that Sun had acted in a manner in breach of NUS’s code of student conduct and that a board of discipline will be convened to look into the matter without giving a specific timeline.
“All NUS students are expected to behave in a manner that is respectful of the community they live in,” he said without condemning Sun’s behavior.
As a NUS PRC scholar and student, Sun Xu is bound by a Code of Student Conduct under the statutes and regulations of NUS of which Section 2 specified clearly that certain behaviour, such as “discrimination of nationalities arising from statements, actions as well as from informal or personal statements or conduct” violates its regulations.

[h=2]Baey Yam Keng not worried about losing votes: I stand by my view (on Sun Xu)[/h]Posted by temasektimes on February 24, 2012
Beleaguered PAP MP Baey Yam Keng who drew public ire over his defense of NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu, remains unfazed by the prospect of losing votes in the next general election as a result of peeving Singaporeans off.
A final year student in Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore, Sun sparked a massive outcry among Singaporeans with his offensive remarks on there “being more dogs than humans in Singapore” on his microblog ‘Weibo’ last Saturday.
In the same thread, Sun used the term “瘪三” to describe Singapore uncles, which is a derogatory word typically used in Shanghai to describe the underclass bums in the society. It means a person who is a tramp, bum, good-for-nothing fella, beggar, drifter, loafer, outcast, vagrant, destitute and worthless person.
However Mr Baey does not think otherwise and cast doubts on the ability of Singaporeans to understand slangs commonly used in mainland China.
In an interview with an English tabloid, Mr Baey said Singaporeans have to accept that, within every community, there will be some who will tarnish the reputation of their peers.
“We (also) need to reflect, are we the way they described?” he said.
Mr Baey even tried to obfuscate Sun’s infamous remark on the ‘dogs’ to suggest that he might mean something else:
“Even his comment about the dogs – it might not literally mean that, it might mean something else, even though it is definitely not something positive.”
His comments on the saga were not quite well received by Singaporeans who posted on his Facebook page threatening not to vote for him in 2016.
However, Mr Baey does not seem to be bothered and said he still stands by his views, as well as his intentions, although he is more mindful of how people might read into the things he says.
“Ultimately I think I want people to judge me over a longer period of time. It’s a lot more about what I do and what I say. Look at me as a person, what my values and views are, and whether they are consistent… so I’m taking it in my stride; I cannot let (the incident) hamper what I need to do in the constituency because I shouldn’t,” he said in response to queries from Yahoo News yesterday.
Mr Baey’s latest comment on the fiasco did not go down too well with netizens who continue to lampoon him.
Tampines resident “Bert” was disappointed with Mr Baey:
“Mr Baey, all the while, you sound sensible as an MP. Now you are talking nonsense. Why foreigners first? PAP said Singaporeans will come first before others. You are my MP in Tampines. You let us down by your nonsense statement. Please retract your statement… and admit mistake on your part if you said that in the spur of the moment…”
“SGer” fumed:
“Why should a foreigner be place on equal standing with a local student if they are of the same standard? Even if the local is slightly below the foreigner, it is still right to favour the local and not the foreigner. We didn’t pay taxes and send our sons to serve NS for 2 years so that the govt can give our money and sacrifices away to feed all these foreigners who only use this country as a stepping stone and looking down on us?”
During a parliamentary session this week, it was revealed that the Singapore government spends some $36 million dollars on scholarships to over two thousand students each year, or about S$174,00 per scholar. However, only 45 percent of the foreign scholars obtained Second Class Honors and above as compared to 36 percent of locals.
Foreign scholars like Sun Xu at NUS and other Singapore universities have their tuition fees and living expenses all covered by their scholarships. They are also guaranteed a well-paying job upon graduation as part of their bond and the men are exempted from National Service unlike male Singapore citizens who are burdened with a hefty tuition loan and rendered uncompetitive in the job market by their mandatory reservist obligations such as IPPT and ICT.

25 years old, now fourth year engineering student

in Singapore for 8 years, means he was 17 years old when he was Secondary 3.

Local kids are usually 15 years old in Secondary 3.

How nice for local kids to be able to compete with a 17 year old scholar? Wonderful for their egos!

[h=2]NUS alumni urged to stop donations to nus[/h]
The NUS PRC scholar Sun Xu saga continues to ramble on as angry netizens call on NUS alumni to stop their donations to NUS to protest against its refusal to punish Sun Xu over his insensitive remarks on there ‘being more dogs than humans in Singapore.’

Despite receiving numerous complaints from Singaporeans, NUS has stubbornly refused to take concrete disciplinary action against Sun except putting up the usual ‘wayang’ that they will ‘investigate’ the matter.
