SINGAPORE - The number of private homes sold soared to a 14-month high last month, indicating housing demand remained buoyant and that the Government may have to introduce more measures to cool the market.

Private home sales last month, including executive condominiums more than tripled to 2,077 units, compared to 670 units sold in December, data from the Urban Redevelopment Authority showed yesterday.

This was despite new measures introduced in December that included a requirement that foreigners who are not permanent residents pay an additional stamp duty equal to 10 per cent of the property value.

Wow I'm really impressed! Kudos to the PAP govt for doing a fantastic job of keeping the economy humming along nicely.

Many other countries would give and arm and a leg just to achieve half the growth rate that Singapore, under Mr Lee's astute leadership, is achieving during these difficult times.

It is during periods of turmoil that I feel comforted and secure knowing that my Sing$ assets are insulated from the wild ride that other currencies are going through.

The PAP leadership knows what's important. Pandering to the wishes of electorate doesn't equate to good govt. In fact, we can see, in the case of Greece, how this approach has led to absolute disaster. The PAP concentrates on the fundamentals which are sound financial management, an ongoing strategy of growth and investment and most important of all, a stable and honest style of governance that can be trusted to do what is right rather than what is popular.

The economy is going strong, the country is getting wealthier by the day, the problem of dependence on unfriendly neighbours for water has been solved, infrastructure development is on track and the Island is now the fun capital of Asia. This truly is a great country to be part of. I really am proud to be a member of the "Singapore Inc" team. It is a real honour.

They should give average price/sqf. Many developer are giving discount 10~20%. Some even 30%.
Always misleading on data only show good data.

This is a minor issue that hardly detracts from the overall success story of our great nation.

Because Singapore is so successful and because everything works well, Singaporeans have developed this really annoying habit of nit picking over the smallest and most irrelevant of issues.

In life, we need to look at the big picture in order pass sound judgement.
