Such still-fat pay cheques may give pause. Yet let's applaud Singapore for what it's trying to achieve by paying top salaries to leaders and ministers: Attracting the best and brightest to public service and reducing the temptation to engage in graft.

Done properly, such initiatives can make government more efficient and economies more vibrant. Transparency International has ranked Singapore among the world's top five least-corrupt governments since 2001, and according to Worldwide Governance Indicators, an index supported by the World Bank, it has also been among the best governed.

That's what I've been saying all along. Singapore is tops in many ways. The citizens should be more appreciative of the PAP. They do an excellent job.

The citizens certainly have appreciated the PAP otherwise they wouldnt have voted them in for 50 years. It is not that they are not appreciative of the PAP, but that they need to kick their butts every now and then to make them buck up, not become complacent, and think that if not for us, they wouldnt be where they are today. The citizens are just listening to their Dear Old Leader to stick some spurs into the PAP's hides to make sure they dont get a dose of mediocre to bad govt.
