SINGAPORE - A heavy thunderstorm yesterday afternoon caused flash floods in several areas across the island including the basement of Raffles City shopping centre.
Shops were forced to close for several hours due to the flooding and a short power outage was reportedly experienced.
It is the first time flooding has occurred in the mall.
RELATED STORIES
According to The Straits Times (ST), the flooding was due to a clogged drain at the ground level, said spokesman Phyllis Cheong.
One of the mall's escalator was also shut down for maintenance checks, said the spokesman.
At around 2pm, water that first started trickling down the stairs between the Birkenstock shoe shop and the Crumpler bag store quickly turned into a torrent.
A Crumpler sales assistant Nursyahidah Hassan, 24, even said her shop suffered a half-hour power outage.
A row of food stalls at the basement level of the mall was blocked off until 3.30pm.
Meanwhile, water level sensors installed by PUB in drains and canals showed the Stamford Canal swelling.
The water level at Lucky Plaza, Somerset and Killiney Road hovered at between 75 and 90 per cent full before subsiding.
NEA expects short showers with thunder in the afternoons over the Chinese New Year long weekend.
