NSP felt that there was no purpose for them to continue with SDA. There was no room for expansion or taking over the leadership so they left us. They have proven that they were right based on the 2011 election but not 100% right.

Kieran James: Tell me about the Potong Pasir saga. I know Patrick Lee thought it ridiculous when Mrs Chiam said “Desmond Lim does not have the X factor”.

Take it. The election results show. I said I will support her in every way. It does not work like a dynasty [meaning “should not work like a dynasty”]. Why do I help him run the party and the town council for fourteen years and then at the critical moment close to the election [we] have a fight? We should hold hands together and stop fighting.

Kieran James: What happened with the Reform Party first joining and then not joining the SDA?

Any politician to be the leader, he must stay connected with the grassroots [and not] come in as an economist, a professional, and very confident of himself

Kieran James: Now for a key question I think many people will be interested to know your answer to. Why were you involved in the only three-cornered fight in the May 2011 GE?

Normally we have closed [inter-]party meetings [for] horse-trading [and to arrange] compromises to avoid three-cornered fights. We had a big party [WP] just there to listen, [with] no room for negotiations.

Also, I think if you look at it overall we [SDA] did quite well, Pasir Ris [GRC] team performed over 30%, around the same as star performers in Yishun Central and Holland-Bukit Timah [GRC]. [KJ: Here Desmond is referring to the WP team which scored 41.6% in Nee Soon GRC, formerly known as Yishun Central, and the SDP “A” team which scored 39.9% in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.]

KJ: Why do you think the Workers’ Party was so successful in this GE?

DL: This is my own interpretation: they know how to play with ground sentiment. The ground sentiment is that they [voters] are unhappy and they will vote for whoever stands against PAP. It [final vote result] depends on the PAP propaganda machine and the demographic. It is not so much about the candidates even in Aljunied [GRC] – it is about the demographic and being able to stir up the emotions and fear. The fear factor propaganda [was] that there will be no opposition in Parliament [i.e. if PAP had won Aljunied].

but i think he has a point that Lina shouldnt just parachut in....

and KJ shouldnt think he is some god sent economist to the opp without walking the ground...

Although it is fair to say that Lina Chiam got the nod ahead of Lim Bak Kwa because of who she is and not because of her ability,nevertheless Bak Kwa himself has himself to blame for not being politically-savvy enough. He is a sore loser and still wallowing in a state of self-denial. If WP had indeed won Aljunied GRC because of "more to do with demographics" as theorised by Bak kwa, then it would not be just a case of 1 GRC lost to the opposition by the PAP. Ground sentiments alone would have accounted for at least 2 more GRCs going to the opposition. As in football, you nearly always need a dream team to achieve certain results; people who can inspire confidence and who come across as competent and sincere; willing to serve and it definitely help if they do not demand or expect million dollar salaries/perks for their service to the nation.

 

[Perspective]

Honestly, there are people who aspire for political office but are not suitable for it. He is one of them. I am not sounding exclusive, but it is not for everyone.

Imagine if I am Chiam or Low or Chee, and know the familiar 70 year old woman that pushes a trolley to collect carton boxes every morning. If people asked me if she will make a good opposition candidate for the party I lead since she will find affirnity with the poor, if I say yes I am just being ridiculously populist, if I say no I get fired upside down for looking down on people. But without proper education, only able to speak one dialect, maybe even lacking acument due to age, lack of education/awareness or inborn, how is she going to do well as MP.

So therefore make it known that I am not shooting or looking down on Mr Bak Chuan here. He has a degree while I personally do not, but is just not suitable. The political acumen is probably even lower than the old lady and it is inborn. Even the old lady would not give an interview scoring his own points all around the shop. If Mr Bak Chuan had stayed as a grassroots leader either with SPP or even with WP (since it is the only opp party with seats/wards), everyone including himself will be happier for it.

Nice piece of entertaining crap. I have a good laugh on the last part when this endorsement appeared:

"Desmond Lim has authorized me to publish this complete interview on this website. He has also given permission for Part I only to be published at THE ONLINE CITIZEN."

Such folks provide much relief to the political scene.

Political quotient is next to none for this Desmond chap.

I read the interview by Yee Jenn Jong. What a contrast in political maturity.

Always remember if you want to be a politician, speak and behave like one, so as to score political brownie points with the electorate. It is not for you to seek solace or spend time arguing your case for trivial points. There is little sympathy for your endeavour if you do not know how to demonstrate the art of campaigning.

The media is all important, and the inability to make use to your advantage, marks you as not cut out for politics.

In just this one transcript, this Desmond guy just revealed much about himself - inept, hopeless and clueless ..and these are just my kind words to describe him.
