This story deserves a thread of its own in the main folder.
Got this from the Singapore Crime folder, credit to the good general for the original post.

I'm just wondering how the victims got scammed. U mean they didn't bother to ask which cousin, i.e. the name, or at least call the cousin back to confirm before transferring the money?

Woman arrested for cheating
Posted: 10 January 2012 2029 hrs

SINGAPORE: Police have nabbed a 23-year-old woman, believed to be involved in at least seven cases of cheating island-wide by impersonating as the victims' cousin.

Her mode of operation involved getting the victims' contact via social networking site Facebook. After trawling through Facebook, she would SMS her targets and ask for loans ranging from S$500 to S$2,000.

As part of her ruse, she claimed that she was using a new number because she had lost or changed her old mobile number.

The unsuspecting victims would then transfer their money into the woman's POSB bank account. The victims only realised that they had been cheated after checking with their own cousins.

Acting on information from one victim, police ambushed the suspect at about 3am early Tuesday morning in the vicinity of Hougang Central.

She will be charged in court on Wednesday. If convicted, she could be fined and jailed for up to 10 years.

Police urge other victims who may have also fallen prey to this cheating ruse to come forward and lodge a report.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun, commended his officers' swift response and good investigative probe resulting in the arrest of the suspect.

AC Hsu would also like to advise the public to be vigilant against similar ruses, and to exercise due diligence to check and verify the identity of the individual before parting with their money. The public is also advised to restrict their personal information to reliable and known persons on social media.

blame the naivety of the victims of revealing too much online.

The report didn't say whether the victims revealed the names of the particular cousin the woman was pretending to be.
If they did, they are really naive.
If they didn't, it's not simply naivety, more like stupidity.

before transferring the money, you did not check with your cousins but after the transferred.:*:

That scam is very native. she think she can get away from police investigation?

you mean 'that scammer is very naive' is it? no wonder got a thread on you.

yes i saw it, pap dogs and opposition dogs united.
I cannot answer their posts, because they are too naive, even as an opposition supporters, there have little understanding of basic politics, i cannot explain things to them, that they should know if they attend secondary school.
Years of looking at their post in this forum, i have a clear understanding why PAP reign supreme, PAP have nothing to worry about losing elections, with the quality of opposition supporters in this forum as a guide. There is no way they gotta lose.

To all the oppositon haters of me in that thread, i cannot explain things to you, because to me, you should be send back to secondary school and learn what is basic politic, purpose of politic, nation building. It will demeaning for me to even debate with these milk drinking babies. I will ignore all those people from now on. They have nothing constructive to talk about, i will learn nothing talking to them.

Just a pathetic waste of money for PAP to educate your people and from kindergarden up to adult and all i hear from the opposition supporters and yourself here are just pure rubbish. Just go back to your politic leaders and ask him to set up a night class for you.

yes another opposition supporter here following every where i go to insult me. Grow up opposition supporter. The only reason PAP win everytime, is the pathetic quality of their supporters, keep dragging your cause down the drain, it is clear for everyone here to see what is the opposition all about.

To clarify further, it seems that the victims had revealed the names of their cousins on facebook, hence the woman knew the names.
What is bewildering is why the victims simply transferred the money upon receiving an sms from their respective "cousin". Did they actually forget that they had mentioned the cousins' names on facebook?

Perhaps an even more perplexing question is this: What on earth is facebook for?
