December 24th, 2011

It looks like another 50 years have gone past Singapore. Flash floods hit the various parts of Singapore again today in late afternoon. This includes the prime tourist area – Orchard Road.
In Orchard Road, with the heavy downpour, the flood barricades at Liat Tower were activated but it wasn’t enough to prevent the flooding there. Both popular eatery venues, Wendy’s Restaurant and Starbucks, at Liat Tower were flooded. Wendy’s even had to evacuate their customers to safety.
A spokesman of Wendy’s said there was something wrong with the barricade system and their business had been affected by 60%.
Elsewhere, flash floods had also been reported at Cuscaden Road, Newton Circus, Kampong Java, Cambridge Road, Thomson Road and Bukit Timah near Sixth Ave.
As rain was pouring down, netizens kept everyone updated through tweeter:
@AhTing89 Orchard flood agn~
@terencebob not again? SG suey sia!
@izreloaded People at Liat Towers Starbucks were playing a new form of musical chairs this afternoon.
@damz83 Another flood hits town yo!
@christinetohxh 50 years have passed once again. Flash floods at Orchard, avoid if possible. Vivian, pls prepare a shootout.
@paperless2012 WOW! Flash floods hit Liat Towers on Orchard Rd and other parts of Singapore… #sgflood #sgfloods
@Flannery75 Liat Towers’ flood barriers are of zero use, they should demand their money back. #sgflood
PUB said that all 8 gates at Marina Barrage were opened to let the water flow out to sea. The agency also said that various drainage work in several areas is on going and will be completed successively in the next few years.
Hopefully, our new Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, can do a better job this time than his predecessor, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim. At the very least, Dr Balakrishnan shouldn’t make any more wild claims that such flooding occurs only once in 50 years.

So the word flood is taboo in Singapore? The new word now is ponding. So should there be a major flood, the Straits Times and Channel News Asia and all MSM's should replace the word flood with ponding. Example, "At 12.15 today, there was a major ponding in Orchard Road and many cars stalled due to an extremely heavy downpour. In some cases, the waters reached over the roof of cars that parked in the basements of Tanglin Mall. The ponding in a few areas caused traffic snarls that hampered the work of PUB.":oIo:

Why else do you think SG's national icon, Phua Chu Kang wears his signature yellow rubber boots? They come in most handy during floods.

I was going to visit Orchard Rd to see the Xmas decorations & take in the Xmas spirit. However with the trains limping along & the threat of floods I decided to stay away.

I opted to go to the neighbourhood mall where I noticed that Xmas isn't what it used to be:(

Boots must be at waist not knee level given our current problem.
