"CASE expects taxi companies to compete ... and consumers should go for those which give value for money or look for alternate transport other than taxis if fares are too high."
Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE) executive director Seah Seng Choon noted that ComfortDelGro justified its fare revisions with the increased demand for taxi services. But it failed to back its case with statistics, Mr Seah said.
The latest developments have led observers to question the behaviour of the taxi operators. While it was "predictable" that the companies followed ComfortDelGro's lead, they were surprised by the operators' weak justification for the fare increases.
TransCab did not provide any reasons - it merely gave journalists its new fare structure in response to media queries.
