Even top brass, such as vice-president for rail operations Lui Wai Meng, were seen ushering commuters onto waiting shuttle buses. The company's CEO, Ms Saw Phaik Hwa, was also making the rounds at stations, checking on the situation.

SMRT activated 300 staff to help commuters at the stations. At least 10 employees were spotted at Orchard station, and staff members inside and outside various stations were holding maps of the train lines to show people where to go.

It had come under fire and later apologised for its poor communication with commuters during Thursday's five-hour train shutdown on the North-South line.

But when part of the same line went down again on Saturday morning, train operator SMRT pulled out all the stops.

Announcements - made only in English on Thursday - were given in both English and Mandarin at all stations and trains. Directional signs, a problem two days earlier, were also displayed, and directions to free shuttle buses were announced over the PA system.

SMRT activated 300 staff to help commuters at the stations. At least 10 employees were spotted at Orchard station, and staff members inside and outside various stations were holding maps of the train lines to show people where to go.

The train operator also deployed 80 buses - both SMRT buses and private coaches - to all stations between Ang Mo Kio and Raffles Place as a bridging service, and Marina Bay and City Hall to provide alternative transport to passengers.

The first bus arrived at 7.30am at Newton MRT station and 7.35am at Raffles Place station. The disruptions had started at about 6.50am.

And while it received flak earlier for not spreading news of the train disruption via social media, it promptly launched a new twitter feed - @smrt_singapore - to give updates on Saturday.

On the last weekend before Christmas, commuters who could not get to the city to do their last-minute shopping were annoyed, but acknowledged that the train operator had done better this time.

Ms Ida Johansson, who was waiting for a free shuttle bus to Orchard Road at Toa Payoh station said: 'It's much better than I thought. Breakdowns happen, so what can you do?'

Said 21-year-old NSF Lee Lie Zhen, who wanted to go from Bishan to City Hall: 'It's very bad timing for SMRT that it happened today. But I think the way they handled the situation today was okay. There were enough announcements and I knew what was going on.'

Still, there were those who were fuming because their plans were thwarted.

Ms Titiana Annzavier, 26, who works in sales, was heading to Orchard Road when she was forced to get off at Toa Payoh.

'I'm very angry. Everything SMRT has said so far has been a standard reply and apologies are just words. They should fix the problem once and for all. My shopping mood is a little bit spoiled.'

I am in two minds about it. Should he not be trying to solve the problem rather than directing traffic? After all, he is the VP for RAIL operations leh. If the VP for Sales or PR does that, I think it is a good gesture. This seems too PR leow. Trying too hard.

shucks! ...

paid millions juz 2 usher commuters? ... muz b highest paid ushers in ze world! ...

And so SMRT's damage control kicks into overdrive.

Maybe trying 2 grab sum attention...ah saw now sitting on thin ice...she fall...he rise...:D:D

Maybe the vp for sales is too busy trying to increase the occupancy rates of the retail shops...................

SINGAPORE: Trains for the North-South and East-West Lines will be running slower, as the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has asked SMRT to apply a temporary speed restriction of 40 kilometres per hour in certain areas.

At a media conference on Sunday afternoon, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said this will add five minutes to an end-to-end journey, which normally takes 60 minutes.

Fewer trains will also be in service, as some have been damaged.

This means that fewer trains will be in service during peak hours.

An overnight inspection of Singapore's rail system by the LTA found several "claws" dislodged, mainly at sections of tunnels in the city area.

These claws secure the third rail to the support structure.

They were found in areas where floating slab tracks are installed to minimise vibrations to nearby buildings.

The LTA will continue its investigations to determine if there's any correlation between the floating slab tracks and dislodged claws, as well as if there are any other contributing factors.

The LTA wants SMRT to closely monitor the tracks, including the third rail.

It has also urged SMRT to install monitoring equipment to measure train vibration in these tunnel sections to ensure that the floating track structures are functioning well to absorb vibration.

The LTA has completed full inspection of the tracks and trains on the North-South and East-West Lines.

Services resumed at 11am, with the southbound stretch from Ang Mo Kio to Marina Bay starting later at noon.

The LTA said services resumed later than planned to allow the team of engineers to complete inspection of the tracks and trains and rectify the problems.

It said, while train services have fully resumed, much more work must be done.

It said more time is needed to identify and analyse how the equipment damage occurred and caused disruptions.

A team of 150 staff from LTA and SMRT worked overnight, covering the tracks to examine the third rail which carries power supply to the trains.

The LTA said the findings have helped them better understand the possible reasons for the two disruptions on the North-South Line on Thursday night and Saturday morning.

It said it is committed to get to the bottom of the matter and seeks the public's understanding and patience while it carries out the investigations and restores public confidence.

He has to do something to justify his salary. With a mind of his, lucky he didn't go on leave.

If the bus get stuck, the vp can break the glass. Considering his rank, he will not be penalized every time.

Knn serve him right last time b4 he was in ops he was the head of maintainance. Fucking yah yah papaya don't give face one in meetings always belittle his subs infront of others just to make him look powerful. Infront smile smile behind poke you. Anyhow promote his lap dogs and his lap dogs go around bully others in the workshop. Best part is after he got transfered another director took over lagi more funny. Don't know anything about maintainance at all everytime see the line managers throw smoke bombs at him during meetings and he swollow it whole harharhar. Best part is this chap that took over him so blur that only know how to stand at the gate to catch people going for 5mins early lunch and catch the nightshift for using the company van to go out and buy makan. Imagine you have a joker that is paid directors pay doing security guard job instead of coming up ways to improve maintainance.

Aiyah being so helpful for just one day only... He should do this everyday till all problems are fully rectified...

This Lui Wai Meng can give No Porn Lui a good fight in the ugly factor. Is it a Lui thing or ......? Both are surely losers this year.

Can someone time it, see true bo:confused:

I took a train this evening & wondered why the train was running slower than normal:confused:

I'll try to avoid the trains until the problems are rectified, just in case there is another repeat :)
