Many nodded as Mr Lee stressed the importance of looking beyond local guanxi (personal connections) networks, beyond family and beyond profits if they want to succeed in the new, globalised world.
The convention officially opened yesterday with an address by Mr Lee, who said that to reach greater heights, ethnic Chinese businessmen must leave behind some traditional practices. These include keeping the business within the family and relying heavily on guanxi networks.
'I offer, humbly, three suggestions,' Mr Lee said to the businessmen.
The insistence on handing the business to offspring limits the companies' potential to expand and leads to succession problems, he said. 'A family business also makes it harder to compete against global businesses that hire and promote the best talent from all over the world, regardless of family ties.'
On the Chinese tendency to depend on guanxi in business, he said enhancing links - especially with Chinese in other countries - would be beneficial.
'However, Chinese entrepreneurs cannot rely on guanxi alone for success,' he said. 'As China opens up more to the world, and as more Chinese travel and operate overseas and become used to international norms and ways of doing business, they will have a wider choice of partners and networks to work with.'
