The fundamental problem is that they are still relying on their 50-year old method at a time when it is no longer cool nor prestigeous to be associated with the PAP. I have yet to come across anyone in recent years that they are card-carrying PAP members - but certainly have come across quite a few of those in the opposition.
Top of the list is that if potential candidates have to be invited, it is obvious that they have no passion to serve. Has anyone heard that Low Kia Tiang invites people for tea to chat? So, one would reasonably surmise that the tea session is no more than just offering guarantees of sort that they will be financially rewarded after serving their apprenticeships in the back benches. Even then, you now find quite a few of the newbies parachuted into the cabinet. One could also reasonably therefore that the last two batches of recruits have not been exactly rich in pickings.
So, I read with amusement $8 Khaw's speech at the PAP Talk Fest that "...MPs present the human face of the PAP, and it must be one of COMPASSION, DEDICATION, HONESTY AND SINCERITY."
If the next batch of PAP candidates have to be dragged in screaming, making them feel guilty about the scholarships have been given to them, and promised ministerships, how can they have compassion, dedication, honesty and sincerity? One needs PASSION before they can even offer glimpses of what the Malaysian Cow wants.
