Biggest challenge is not taking back Aljunied but in recruiting and keeping talent. Aljunied is a small matter compared to this. If the only thing you're doing is scraping the bottom of the barrel, you're going to keep losing GRC after another, and the more senior cadres will start thinking twice about many issues.

They have fought in opposition ward in Hillview Ave estate and won. But look at what they did to the ward after winnning back - bull dozed the whole estate and dispersed the voters. That is the ugly side of winning back opposition ward. So who would you trust to give your votes to?

Honestly the only 5 methods they have:

1) Better their government policies.

2) Appear more nice to dissent.

3) At the same time, keep the media biase.

4) Recruit more and better members as grassroots people.

5) Make more presence at grassroots.

All the above are not easy. Threatening with uneven treatment of wards, ISA, put the fear of an opposition government, lawsuits are not going to work at least against WP.

Let's not talk about fielding better candidates, getting better leaders. These are elementary and applies to opposition as well.

The rest will be up to WP and to an extent, the opposition camp. In fact, WP has more up its plate.

1) Do well in Aljunied and reach out to other grounds at the same time.

2) Build an organisation and system out of the party to be more effective and meritocratic.

3) Present a united but not uniform front.

4) Refine and promote your policy positions to raise confidence that you can govern. East Coast may still stay with PAP if people are never going to be confident of you no matter how you walkabout.

5) Be more careful of public image.

George Yeo mellowed in recent years and he did a great job as foreign minister. I have no sympathies for him though. He was part of the regime like any other cabinet minister and if he must be cannon fodder to pave the way for real change, I feel no loss.

WP won aljunied because Low & Sylvia has building up momentum for years. Low was a good MP close to two decades before he finally mustered enough political capital to take down a GRC, with the help of a few good men (and woman). These things are not achieved in a day, and for that we should be grateful.

I am wondering what went through those ministers and pap mps' minds when they heard lee hsien loong said he will not abandon Aljunied. It must be tormenting for them to ponder about who will be the sacrificial lambs to be sent to the Aljunied slaughterhouse in 5 years time. That being said, if I am in lee junior's shoes, and there is nothing legal that I can whack and bring down Workers Party and its incumbent Aljunied MPs during this five years, I (as a wise politician) would probably send emeritus senior minister Goh Chok Tong (if there is no "violent" objection from him) and a team of veterans but dispensable backbenchers to contest Aljunied GRC. It makes perfect sense for all parties (probably except Goh himself), instead of sending Mah Bow Tan or Wong Kan Seng, as some may suggest.

Lee Junior should also start worrying about the entire East side of Singapore (and not just East Coast GRC), if Aljunied GRC is run competently by the incumbent Aljunied team en route to the next general election and Singaporeans, in general, still feel short-changed by the government and its policies.

As a neutral observer, I too agree that NSP et al should focus on building their party brand and presence on the West side when they still can. It is self-explanatory. SPP can still have a run on Potong Pasir SMC if the smc is still around (which I highly doubt so) in the next election.

There's no way that PAP will take back Aljunied. Citing Potong Pasir as an example is totally irrelevent. Had Chiam ST remained a candidate there, Sitoh will fall flat on his face again. Unfortunately, Lina Chiam was fielded and she's seen as very weak, but mind you, she still came very close. Aljunied is a totally different story. Voters can see for themselves how well WP has managed Hougang (which is just next to Aljunied) and coupled with a slate of very strong candidates, George Yeo or whoever will topple. LHL should instead be more worried that East Coast GRC will be the next to fall. Again voters there will see how well Aljunied fare under WP for the next 5 years and coupled with big clowns Lim Swee Say and Raymond Lim standing there for PAP, WP will snatch East Coast as well. Hougang and Aljunied will prove to voters that municipally, WP is no worse off than PAP in running Town Councils. In fact, WP is regarded as better in many aspects despite not raising service and conservancy charges. With that, voters wouldn't mind handing over East Coast and hopefully Tampines. WP will then establish strongholds in eastern S'pore. Something that PAP will never be able to shake off.
