The last GE showed that candidate in many GRCs won over 40% of the votes.
Doesn't this show that many people are NOT happy to be represented by the ruling party and their elites in those GRCs?
However, the first past the post system practised here is a "stumbling block" which do not favour these group of people.
This system ought to change. It's presence and practise is a mockery and an insult to those who are left "un-represented" in Parliament.
I suggest that there be a system in place where the members of the parties that secured above 41% and those that won by razor-thin majority SHOULD be both brought into Parliament to represent the people that voted for them.
The implementation is simple. The salaries that are going to be paid to the "victorious" MPs should be divided between the two groups - "the razor-thin winners and the razor-thin losers".
Why waste time looking for NMP's. The right leaders have already surfaced and well-prepared to serve the people.
I call upon responsible and true-blue gentlemen in our august Parliament to bring this matter up as a private member bill in Parliament and have it debated till its implementation. Our people would be happy and those who brought the matter up will always be remembered. No amount of rhetoric like, "we will serve those that opposed us" will ever bring true happiness.

heheh... i wouldn't settle for anything less than the voting powers in the Parliament. NCMPs and/or NMPs are ho kua bo ho jiak. the current policies dished out by the PAP still left much to be desired, i'd still choose to vote them out in the next GE. unless of course the NMPs & NCMPs have voting rights, then again why have these seats in place in the beginning? to have more voice? that's good but it doesn't translate into anything effective against the PAP's whims and fancy.

imo, NCMPs should be abolished. NMPs reduced to observer status with no voting rights at all.

first past the post only works well in a system where only two parties get any significant proportion of votes, when one party like PAP get 60% of votes, the results become extremely distorted. we should consider a parallel voting system which combines first past the post with party list proportional representation ( used in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan ). the party list mps will correct or compensate for the disproportionality results created by plurality constituencies. the parliament will be a better representation of peoples votes. if there is PR, there's no need for NCMPs.
