All this is just empty rhetoric as long as PAP Cabinet Ministers do not set an example![TABLE="width: 789"]

SINGAPORE: Education Minister Heng Swee Keat has urged Singaporeans to make philanthropy and volunteerism part of their DNA.

That's one way, he said, to build a cohesive society.

Mr Heng was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a bursary distribution ceremony organised by the Singapore Buddhist Lodge on Saturday.

Elaborating on his maiden speech in Parliament earlier this week, Mr Heng noted that his ministry's emphasis on character education is all about ensuring a resilient Singapore.

He said that's because as a small nation in an increasingly volatile world, it is the character of a society and the shared values among the community that will underscore Singapore's success.

The Education Minister said: "It's also very important for us in valuing the collective that people should contribute to other's success. We should have a mentality of abundance so that those who are successful should help those who are less successful. And in fact, everyone can do that."

Heng has been talking a lot about values, something which I agree should have more focus.

But I wonder whether he realises that it is among some of his party and cabinet collegues that the focus needs to be.

No anyhow say. They donate to their children, banks, property and shares. It is just that they get donations back through dividends and capital gains, in return.:D
