Ever wonder why Char Kuey Tio, Laksa, Chicken Rice, Wanton Noodle, Mee Siam etc are so prevalent in all the hawker centres and food courts? You are right. These are the best foods through the decades, maybe centuries. When rich people after having eaten the best foods want a change, they go for more exoteric food like frog-leg porridge, sharksfin soup, birdnest dessert, abalone noodles etc But are these really better tasting food? No but they provide only relief from the monopoly of eating the best foods which are also the most popular. Long time ago, I attended a top class dinner hosted by a local conglomerate to some Burmese guests during which expensive comb sharksfin soup, sashimi lobster, scallops in shell were served in addition to other good stuff. What did the guests cherished the most? Fried chicken drumstick. They totally avoided the scallops and did not finish their sharksfin.

Nothing special other than overpriced cartilage, spitum, and snail.

When I proposed to my gf, I said that I do not want sharksfin on the menu. Her reply was that she'd marry me even if there wasn't any dinner. So we had ROM signing, and lunch at chinese restaurant at Asia Hotel - two tables (for immediate family only) and no sharksfin.

i think with exception of sharks fin, the rest can eat without feeling bad...people farming abalone liao...

n bird nest, there are breeders who specially create artificial environment for the swallows to build their nest.

xcept sharks fin, you cannot harvest without killing the shark.

I love sharkfin soup shiok! But in Singapore always only available in restaurant part of full course meals. In Thailand I saw got hawker stalls selling it standalone! I feel nothing so cruel. If we eat meat we have to animals.
Farm or wild, kill is kill, eat is eat.

The best that I've had was lobster in Florida whilst on summer vacation. US$30 plus sales tax plus tips, so around US$40 for one who big lobster serving. Plus side dishes and wine, about US$80 for a very good dinner for two.
