Reducing the vehicle growth quota for Singapore is a right move, former presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian said on Tuesday.
There are already too many vehicles in Singapore 'judging from the congestion on roads and the difficulty in finding parking spaces', Mr Tan wrote in his blog on Tuesday.
However, he wrote that Singapore's public transport should be improved, especially the feeder servces 'that brings commuters from their homes to the MRT stations or bus terminus'.
In order to keep costs low for commuters, these services can be exempted from taxes and other fees, he suggested.
At the same time, they will also provide employment opportunities for the older people who have driving licences.
He said: 'Many people have to buy cars due to difficulty in getting public transport, especially if there do not live close to the MRT station.'
'If there is a good system of affordable and convenient local transport, they may be willing to forego the expense of owning and using a private car.'
