In ancient societies, the king and their God normally acknowledges one another (.."by the powers vested in me......, I authorise...."), and the people accept. These days, God is dead and we've acknowledged democracy as the way we select our leaders, and our constituition (or courts) give our elected leader the powers to rule (or fuck us up.)

Some things haven't changed, at least not in essence. So much for progress.
