Coalition governments are common across the world today. More than 75 countries have some form of a coalition government. The experience of many developed countries with coalition governments has shown us that they can produce stable governments, social cohesion and credible economic performance. They have also nurtured great global companies and innovative thinkers. Finland has had coalition governments for 94 years and experienced its most stable government since independence under a “rainbow coalition” of 5 parties. Their rainbow coalition is not unlike our rojak but without the sprinkle of nuts and spice. It also boasts of one of the better known global companies Nokia. Denmark with a population of about 5 million has at least 13 Noble Prize winners, Singapore with a similar population, has none. Even the United Kingdom which has a coalition government since last year, has its share of great companies and has not seen them or investments leave the country. Only yesterday, we read that a Singaporean tycoon, my good old schoolmate from RI, has invested a few hundred million dollars in a British company. So be wary when PAP tells you that coalition governments will frighten away investments.

If ever Tan Jee Say is appointed or wins in an elective office, he has to explain how he studied in a top UK University and speak worse then someone from Toh Tuck Secondary. And he did humanities.

After the PE, went to someone's party and his language became a hot topic. Some people were wondering how he became PPS

Tan Jee Say is 57 now. In his times, many do not speak English as the first language. English wasn't spoken as it is today.

His mother was a washerwoman. Few in his family went to university much less spoke Ingrish at home. He probably has little interaction in the English language other than at school and later in UK. You expect him to speak first class Queens English?

What's more important is his brilliant mind and not his oratorial ability. He could be the most articulate person but if without substance, he is a disappointment as a university graduate.

Don't think he can do a broad base coalition. He is a lone ranger.

Not true. He is an exception. I have been associated with this lot. Those who struggle with language will normally do pure science, engineering and usually avoid the limelight. He is not the only washerwoman's son. There are many who grew up in one room flat and don't speak like this. They speak very well. That is one of the reason they are sent overseas. He actually did PPE which is humanities and strong language competence is key. Lim Swee Say did science and the is specifically there to lead the Mandarin speaking political lot.

I would not consider his mind anywhere close to brilliant. He was a scholar but he did not reach the scholar grade potential. PPS was a surprise and there has to be a story. In the private sector, he has a string of known failures. I am beginning to wonder if he is a ringer.

This chap completely caught me by surprise. As I said when I went to the party, someone raised and everyone was talking about it.

You are generalising. I know humanities scholars who can't articulate like lawyers but nevertheless excel in subjects which require critical thinking. The interviews didn't weed them out but many of them go on to excel in fields like high finance, econometrics and other technical fields.

Ok his England is not perfect... so?

Chiam See Tong and Low Thia Khiang any better? So what if they are better? Are they able to reason and think on their feet as well? I must say TJS is miles ahead when it comes to debating, grasping ideas, holding his ground.

Why waste time with the party... someone raised and everyone was talking about it? Get your priorities right.

Chiam's is absolutely fine. Low is chinese ed so perfectly fine. Neither of them went to Oxford. I am not talking about competency, skill, or ability. His spoken English is unusually bad and I can't even recall someone from a developed country doing humanities speaking like that.

Its an observation.

TJS is miles ahead of not going anywhere. I can bet you now that he will not get into parliament at the GE. His conduct at PE was really bad.

There are many who consider him of integrity and of brilliance. The whole Sg doesn't rest on what you commented.. so please wake up.. stop fooling yourself.

For a smart person, he has been rather naive to take the PAP bait to contest in the PE when he is clearly not eligible. He has been made used of, and he is still grandstanding.

Not only that, he has shown himself to be a political opportunist, betraying TKL after attending TKL's election meeting. His credibility is really .....

If those who support TCB like me feel the same way about him after the elections, he is not going to enter parliament.

I certainly interested to see how he plans to merge them together. Frankly speaking at the end of the day, whether a coalition opposition is possible depends WP. If WP were to say No, all his plans will go bust. However given the results of the last GE, why would WP agree to a coalition that seems to only benefit the smaller parties??? WP have already managed to position itself as the leading opposition party and pple are starting to see it as a strong credible challenger for governing the country. Adding parties with bad rep like SDP and SDA might actually hurt it's chances especially given their history of infighting.

Another big question mark is the very huge ideological difference between SDP and the rest. While parties like WP have policies and general politic direction which are pretty much insynch with the current ruling party albeit with a different interpretation of how things should be done. SDP is radically different from the rest of them. How will they be able to bridge this gap?
