hey bros,

was having a TC session at one of my occasional gatherings with some old friends and one of them said that recently his middle aged relative died from a heart attack caused by consuming alcohol at a party while ill and on antibiotics. Died in his sleep. He had no known heart problems. I am not too sure about whether his family had a history of heart related issues.

Any of you bros know anything like this before?

I ask cos sometimes i do drink when on medication.

I had a friend who vomited blood during a drinking session. The guy who drank the least brought him to hospital & was told it was alcohol poisoning & his liver is, of course, affected. The fella was hospitalised for a couple of months & was never the same.
My late father had an enlarged heart due to drinking too, though he could not drink after his stroke.

So my simple question is: why are you drinking when you are on medication?

tnks for ur reply bro. I dont drink very much ..... only socially . Sometimes though when i have mostly recovered from illness such as flu but am on the last bit of medication then i do drink a little when these meetings happen.

I didnt think that it could have such fatal effects but now i think i'd better just lay off the alcohol when on meds.

The mix of alcohol and medication is usually not a good idea. Alcohol in sufficient quantities neutralizes many antibiotics resulting in an effect similar to not completing your course of medication, i.e., bacteria in your system do not get the knockout dose and start to build resistance.

For other medication which can on their own cause drowsiness, alcohol could be a multiplier. And if such a drug actually also vary your heart rate, alcohol could make it worse, even cause your heart to stop.

Know of one singaporean who went Vietnam to check on some suspected hanky panky business by the local staff in the subsidiary. The local staff hosted a welcome dinner in his honor. Treated him to the best durian. Then brought him to KTV and made him drink alot of hard liquor. The guy kenna heart attack and died there.

The founders of Ben & Jerry ice cream, and their families have had heart problems from eating too much ice cream.

I have to take medication every morning for hypertension. I also drink everyday. When I sick and on antibiotic I cut down my drinks but still drink. Last month my heart doctor advised me that due to my health and weight issue I need, and I say again I need to drink 1 glass of red wine a day. But I told him I am already doing this about 4-6 times a day.

Anyway coming back to the original question, I had already asked 2 doctors before if I am like having flu and on antibiotics can I drink both said to me its ok to drink and should not affect the medication. These 2 doctors are lucky because I change doctors whenever they asked me to stop drinking.

You should try to lose weight. If you don't your a prime candidate for Type II diabetes & that's not going to be fun:(

I'd avoid antibiotics because if you don't watch out your germs can develop a resistance to it.

Instead of red wine you can take resveratrol the active ingredient in red wine.

I know it's difficult to change one's lifestyle but health care in Spore is very expensive. It's really better to avoid it.
