[TD="class: msgtxt"]A worry if PA thinks political rather than people

Letter from Chan Chi Yung
04:46 AM Sep 01, 2011

THE stand taken by the People's Association (PA) on why opposition Members of Parliament cannot be advisers to grassroots bodies is disturbing because of its implications.

For instance, that opposition MPs exist only to oppose the Government instead of playing the roles of offering alternative views, holding the Government accountable and representing their constituents.

In that case, ruling party MPs who oppose the Government's policies during Parliamentary or internal debates, which are often said to be conducted robustly, should not take the adviser's role, even if they are forced to vote according to party Whip.

Other implications: The taxpayer-funded PA is set up to further the Government's goals above all other aims, such as serving the community, while opposition MPs will oppose, for no good reason, community efforts such as active-ageing and anti-dengue programmes.

It seems only People's Action Party (PAP) members are qualified to become advisers even if they are voted out and that the PA is not apolitical, after all. The name "People's Association" is then a misnomer; it should be the "Government's Association".

I fail to see how the PA's stand is in line with oft-stated exhortations to have a harmonious political system.

Instead, it feeds the perception that most government bodies are political and controlled by the PAP for partisan interests.

Is it not obvious PA is just another por lumpar wing of the govt. They will por whoever's lumpar is in power. Knew that a long time ago now then they raise up the issue.

Come GE2016, the Opp shld capture power and use the PA to do the same back on the PAP.

No need to dismantle. PA is a mechanism to stay in power.

PA, community centres etc etc such machinery are of communist concept and should be abolished the day Papzis falls.

But ... When Will That Day Be ?

PAP will probably stay here for another 20 years. The old folks are STILL around to fight you and Nicole. So, PAP staying around to kick YOU citizens with PA, ISD and YPAP SS members.

When will that day end, is whether YOU have decided to do it.

An old Chinese saying, "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. But, the second best time is NOW."

6 in 10 Singaporeans says it's ok...
So the other 4 Singaporeans got to suffer....

Nothing last forever. With the rate ground dissent is gathering the Papzis may not last that long. PA are not suppose to be partisan but lapdogs in it chose to serve the Papzis, such devisive attitude will only quicken the downfall. Like I said before PA are machinery of communist concept, a free country has no room for communism. The old folks of yesteryears may still be around, the question is can they match the younger generation or even the new generation of old folks. Singgiland will not remain a half-bake democracy forever, it's a matter of time.

People Association serves an important role. It's an aspirational organisation that aims to bring the various races together for unity, nationhood and a brighter future. It protects our valuable heritage such as ethnic dances, plays and organises such events as dragon boat races, and a whole host of community events. In 1980, in a bold plan, it introduced residents committees island wide and for the first time allowed neighbours to gather and pursue common interest. People who talk about it being involved in fighting communism, showing bias are just resorting to rumour mongering. I have never seen a single developed democracy that has such an organisation.

You make it sound as if all young Sinkies oppose the PAPzis.

Re: But ... When Will That Day Be ?

Benjamin Pwee - Following our statement to People’s Association’s letter, published on 1st September, with direct reference to Miss Ooi’s comments in her letter that “grassroots advisers are required to help the Government connect with people and help promote government policies and programmes such as anti-dengue and active ageing” and “opposition MPs cannot be expected to do this and thus cannot become advisers to GROs”, we at SPP would like to share two iconic photographs of the Mr Chiam’s active efforts in the anti-dengue and active-aging during his time as MP of Potong Pasir.

I could not emphasise enough this simple fact of life: 路遥知马力, 日久见人心. If the 60% think the PAPzis are doing an excellent job and they're happy with low wages, low purchasing power and the impossibility of retirement, who are we to deprive them of government they voted for? When the deck of cards collapse, and I'm sure it will, then they would naturally turn against the PAPzis. :)

Tell lianbeng that it will happen. Hubris creeps in inevitably with power. And hubris goeth before a fall. The utter incompetence of TPL, Chan Chun Sing, Teo Ser Luck, Vivian Balakrishnan et al. are an affront to the public office once graced by the likes of Goh Keng Swee and Hon Sui Sen. The moribund state of the PAP is clear for all to see.

Just kidding??

Never will be all but the numbers are picking up by the days be it resentment or dissent. The Papzis are well aware but so long as choose to ignore or stay in denial and offers nothing to reconcile, it's a matter of time things becomes too little too late.

Developed democracy does not work that way. The association's recent spat with WP, do you still see it as embracing unity and nationhood?? I dont think so, it serves if not under a political party the Papzis even though it's not suppose to have partisanship. Its behavior leans if not along ideologies of Communism.

You fellas have to foot the bill for them

By that time, it's NOT their Lee's problem anymore. They can get away with crime with lots of money that actually belongs to the people. By that time, you fellas have to foot the bill for them. Justice ? Tell me about it.

Re: You fellas have to foot the bill for them

Pain is necessary to rid the Sinkie sheep of their brainwashing. No pt arguing or debating with them. They are immune to reason. The only way is for Singapore to suffer an economic crisis in the proportions of Greece.
