Tan Jee Say welcomes support of Temasek Review Emeritus
PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Tan Jee Say’s strong rhetoric against the Government has attracted the support of political website Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) and opposition supporters from across different parties.
But he has welcomed them and is not worried that this may put more moderate Singaporeans off from voting for him.
During a walkabout in Chinatown yesterday on the campaign’s second day, Mr Tan said that the (TRE) website’s decision to support him is ‘their personal endorsement and voluntary’.
‘It is good that people from all diverse sources are giving me their endorsement. I reach out to everyone,’ he said.
Temasek Review Emeritus is known for its strong editorials attacking government policies and figures. It posted a note saying that the endorsement was from two of its seven editorial staff.
Mr Tan, a self-styled investment adviser who is in a four-way fight for the elected presidency, also disagreed that strong support for him from the Singapore Democratic Party – the party whose ticket he stood on in the last general election – would hurt his chances at the presidential polls.
He said he also has support from ex-People’s Action Party (PAP) MPs and grassroots activists, but declined to give names.
‘I have made it very clear that this is above party politics. Before I came, I met a few ex-PAP staff, and they were giving me support and they were very unhappy that the PAP had deviated from its original ideology of public service, of putting people first, of not being motivated by money or high salaries and being divorced from the common man,’ he said.
His economic ideas, which include the dismantling of Temasek Holdings, imposing a minimum wage and the shrinking of the manufacturing sector in favour of services, ‘are shared by a lot of parties, not just SDP’, he said.
‘Even where I support the free market, it is consistent with the PAP manifesto of a free market too, and of the other parties. So does this make me aligned with PAP?… This is a free market of ideas, and you just pursue your ideas. It’s not the monopoly of any political party.’
Mr Tan declined to take more questions on criticisms of his private-sector career which have circulated online and through e-mail anonymously. ( link )
He said the writer of that e-mail had lost credibility because of ‘factual inaccuracies’.
‘That’s all I want to say. I do not want to waste time, people’s time, engaged in all these things.’
Mr Tan has even garnered the support of the eccentric hair products seller, Mr Zeng Guoyan, who considered running as an independent candidate in Mountbatten SMC in the May General Election.
Mr Zeng, wearing the same yellow baju melayu and songkok he had worn on Nomination Day for the May elections, gave out fliers in support of Mr Tan, that he had printed himself.
He also led the gathered crowd in loud cheers.
‘We want a person who can check on the government and our CPF money. The PAP cannot abuse their power, what they promise they have to deliver,’ he said
